ATHOL — Down three runs, the Athol baseball team scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings, three in the fifth and one in the sixth to defeat Franklin County Tech, 9-4, on Monday afternoon.
The Red Raiders improved to 1-1 on the year.
The team had nine hits, including four doubles and one triple to go along with six walks in the win.
“We hit the ball with authority today and racked up the extra base hits,” said Athol coach Josh Talbot. “They weren’t cheapies and some of those doubles would have been triples if we were running out of the box.”
Sophomore Mark Ferrari came on in relief to get the win, throwing 4⅓ innings of one-hit ball to go along with 10 strikeouts.
“(He) was dominant,” said Talbot. “He took charge on the mound and allowed our bats to take care of the rest.”
Robbie Nelson went 2-for-3 with one walk for the Red Raiders, scoring one run and knocking in one. Ferrari also went 1-for-2 with one double, one run and two RBIs.
The Red Raiders play Tuesday at 4 p.m. against South Hadley.
