Following a sunny Saturday, winter struck again late Sunday night into Monday morning.
Heavy rainfall and some snow made the roads slippery for commuters. The Orange Highway Department said it started treating the roads around 9 p.m. Sunday night and went out to plow at 6 a.m. Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a winter weather advisory warning was in effect until 10 a.m., with a chance of strong gusts of wind into the afternoon.
The Athol Police Department said the only call they received Monday morning was for a vehicle located off of Partridgeville Road in Athol. The police went to the scene after the Public Works Department saw the vehicle while plowing the road and called for assistance. No injuries were reported.
The Athol Fire Department said they did not respond to any reports of an accident.
Patrick Marvin, spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, said there were 264 pieces of equipment out throughout the evening into the morning treating the roads across Massachusetts. The bulk of the equipment was used in the central and western parts of the state, he said, with about 200 pieces of equipment primarily treating the roads in those areas.
The forecast for the upcoming week from the National Weather Service calls for more rain. Concerns of flooding due to rain and snow melt near the Connecticut River could lead to substantial rises around the river.
