ATHOL — Pioneer Valley Regional High School built a seven-run lead in the top of the fifth inning and that proved to be the difference against the Athol varsity softball team, Monday.
Despite a brief rally, the Panthers beat the Red Raiders, 8-5.
Sadey Lehtomaki hit a three-run home run over the right field fence for the Red Raiders (6-5) in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to four. Amber Mahony singled in Haley Wrigley in the sixth to cut PVRS’ lead to 8-5, but the Red Raiders had only one single in the seventh.
Lindsey Leblanc had two singles for the Red Raiders, while Mahony added a double. Wrigley also doubled, while Haley Bigwood had one hit.
Bigwood pitched five innings, striking out three and giving up six hits and six walks. Leblanc pitched two innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.
