ATHOL — The Athol varsity softball team took advantage of struggling Franklin County Tech, Wednesday.

The Red Raiders used 11 walks and nine hits to defeat the Eagles 19-1 in 5 innings.

Haley Bigwood led the offensive attack with two hits, including a three-run home run over the left-center field fence. Haley Wrigley had three hits, Amber Mahony had two hits, and Destiny Wrigley and Celeste Torraco each had one hit.

The team used three walks, a double by Destiny Wrigley and singles by Mahony and Haley Wrigley to go up 6-1 in the bottom of the first inning. Athol extended its lead to 10-1 in the second thanks to runs by Mahony, Sadey Lehtomaki, Hannah Lajoie and Haley Wrigley.

The Red Raiders (7-7) scored eight runs, including five straight with one out, in the third to go up 18-1. Lexi Forte scored the team’s final run in the fourth inning.

Bigwood pitched three innings for Athol, striking out five and walking four. Linsey Leblanc pitched the final two innings and struck out four.
