BALDWINVILLE — The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation offering a free interpretive hiking program, “Interpreting Forest Management at Otter River,” on Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Participants will meet at the Otter River State Forest Interpretive Center next to Beaman Pond. Forest management is currently being conducted at the state forest. Join DCR Management Forester Joelle for an interpretive hike that will discuss the context of current forest conditions and how forest management is changing the landscape of Otter River State Forest in both the short-term and long-term future.

You will walk through a one-mile portion of the forest that is undergoing forest management, aiming to transform the 85-year old plantation forest into a diverse forest condition that is more resilient to natural disturbance, and that increases biodiversity of both plant and animal species.

This is a moderate one-mile hike on hilly, uneven terrain, so wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes and bring water. The program repeats on July 14 and 28, Aug. 11 and 25 and Sept. 8 and 22, all Saturdays.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Parking fees apply. Reasonable accommodations are met upon request.
