AMHERST — Police are investigating the death of a man who fell Tuesday from a building at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Mary Carey, a spokeswoman for the Northwestern district attorney’s office, said in an email that UMass and Massachusetts State Police responded at about 5:25 p.m. to reports of a man who had fallen from the Lederle Graduate Research Center on Governors Drive.

Police found the body of a 25-year-old Hampton, N.H., man who had apparently fallen from the 16th floor of the building, Carey said. The man was a former UMass Amherst student who was not enrolled at the university when he died. Authorities have not released his name.

Carey said that foul play is not suspected in the man’s death, and it is considered a noncriminal matter. UMass spokesman Edward Blaguszewski said that there is no danger to the community.

The death remains under investigation by UMass Police, state police detectives assigned to the Northwestern district attorney’s office and the state medical examiner’s office.
