ATHOL — Before heading to the Athol-Orange Rotary Club’s Summerfest this Friday, residents can lace up their running shoes for the first 5K run associated with the event and held by the local YMCA.

“We’ve only done the Big Cheese 5K, so this is our second attempt at doing a road race. We want to get people moving in a fun-type of atmosphere and get them excited about Summerfest,” said Matt Talbot, associate executive director of the Athol Area YMCA.

The race will start at Athol High School and finish with a lap around the track, said Talbot. Runners can register at the YMCA or online at their website and Facebook. Same-day registration starts at 4 p.m. on Friday in the high school cafeteria for a 6 p.m. start time.

The adult entry fee for the 5K is $25, while the youth entry free is $20. All the proceeds will go toward scholarships for local children to attend YMCA summer camps.

“These proceeds specifically will go towards youngsters in town so they have good, positive activities to do during the summer,” said Talbot.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three overall male and female runners in each category.

Talbot said the YMCA is still looking for volunteers to help out during the race at the registration table or assisting runners with directions on the course. Those interested can contact Talbot or executive director Jeanette Robichaud.

Sponsors for the event include Pete’s Tire Barns, L.S. Starrett Company and Kessler Investments.
