ATHOL — After defeating Chair City Youth Soccer 3-1 in the Nashoba Valley Cup, the Athol Soccer Club’s boys 9-post grad team will now compete for a bid in the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions.

Athol Soccer Club went up 2-1 at halftime against Chair City Youth Soccer, and tacked on another goal in the second half. Maysin Tarbell, Hayden Herk and Anthony Negron all scored one goal.

The Massachusetts Tournament of Champions features eight teams. All eight teams will compete in pool play under standard pool play rules. Pool play began on Friday night in Lancaster, with Athol Soccer Club taking on the South Shore Champions, Brockton at 5 p.m. Athol Soccer Club will play two more games on Saturday, facing MAYS champion, Worcester, at 9 a.m., and BAYS champion, the Needham Thunder, at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be held at the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Headquarters in Lancaster.

If the Athol Soccer Club places as one of the top two teams in its group, it will advance to a four-team playoff on Sunday to determine the state champion.
