ATHOL — After three games played in District 3 group play in the pursuit to the Little League World Series, the Chuck Stone All-Stars sit in fourth place with a 1-2 record after Monday night’s loss to Quabbin.

In other group play games on Monday, Leominster National took down North Leominster 5-0 and Leominster American defeated Lunenburg 15-6.

After three games played by each team, Leominster National (3-0) is in first place, while North Leominster (2-1) resides in second place and Quabbin (2-1) is in third. North Leominster sits ahead of Quabbin due to the tie-breaker rule of runs scored, in which North Leominster (21) have scored more than Quabbin (20). The two have yet to face each other, which makes the initial tie-breaker of head-to-head records not applicable. Chuck Stone (1-2) is in fourth place, winning the tie-breaker over Leominster American (1-2) with 23 runs to Leominster American’s 16. The same rules apply to these two teams as it did to North Leominster and Quabbin. Lunenburg (0-3) is in sixth place.

Round four of group play begins on Thursday with Chuck Stone hosting Leominster National at 5:30 p.m. Quabbin will host Leominster American, while Lunenburg hosts North Leominster, both at the same time and day.

As things stand, Chuck Stone needs to win at least one of its two remaining games to qualify as one of four teams in the single-elimination tournament to decide District 3’s representative. If Chuck Stone loses its matchup on Thursday and Leominster American defeats Quabbin, the results would put Chuck Stone in fifth. If that were to happen, Chuck Stone will need to defeat Leominster American in their head-to-head matchup, which would move both teams to 2-3 and give Chuck Stone the advantage in the standings because it won the head-to-head matchup. If Chuck Stone were to defeat North Leominster but lose to Leominster American, things get murky.

It’s almost impossible to predict without knowing the results of the other games how the standings would fall if that were to happen. But if it did, it would come down to a combination of whether Leominster American defeats Quabbin on Thursday.

There’s too much variation to accurately predict if Chuck Stone will qualify for the single-elimination tournament or not, but things will look more clear after Thursday’s round of games. One thing is for certain, though. Chuck Stone will have to win at least one more game to qualify.
