ATHOL — Athol High School incoming junior Haley Bigwood recently qualified for and participated in the Bay State Games’ softball showcase from July 9 through 11.

The Bay State Games consisted of six teams: Metro, Southeast, Coastal, Central and West. Each team was made up of Massachusetts high school athletes in grades 9 to 11. Each team is named after its region within Massachusetts with its players reigning from the local area. All games took place at Danehy Park in Cambridge.

Bigwood competed on the Metro team coached by Julissica Rona. To make the team, Bigwood was evaluated at a June tryout. The process was rather competitive, with more than a dozen players getting turned down per team.

Bigwood earned a roster spot after earning the Most Valuable Player award for the Athol High School varsity softball team. Bigwood hit .464 throughout the course of the season along with six home runs and 30 RBIs. Bigwood also scored 25 runs along with eight doubles and two triples.

The Metro team finished 0-5 at the tournament.
