My mother, a lifelong resident of Athol, passed away recently. We had a beautiful service for her. So many from Athol were in attendance, showing support to this lifelong resident and her family. After the service ended, we followed the hearse to Highland Cemetery, where we would say “goodbye” to my mother.
As we entered Highland Cemetery, I could not believe my eyes. That cemetery was a disgrace. I don’t think it had been mowed or cleaned up since before Memorial Day. Weeds were up to our knees. The tree above my parents’ plot is dead, with branches getting ready to fall.
I could not believe it. It was embarrassing and disappointing. There should always be money in the budget to take care of the lifelong residents who passed away and are resting in peace in Athol’s cemeteries. Please don’t forgot those who have passed before us. Don’t they deserve our respect?
