ATHOL — A 52-year-old Athol man died in a one car accident on Main Street early Sunday morning. Athol Police Lieutenant Ron Cote said the initial 911 call was received at 6:33 a.m. When police responded to the scene, they observed a Toyota sedan had apparently veered off the road near the front of the hospital and took down a utility a pole, the momentum causing the vehicle to roll over and come to rest on its side.
The sole occupant, whose name is not being released at this time, died at the scene.
“There were no witnesses and no skid marks,” said Cote. “Nothing suspicious.”
It is not known whether a medical condition caused the accident, or the accident caused a medical condition. The incident is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) team.
The Athol Department of Public Works used barricades to block off the section of Main Street between Mechanic Street to Lake Ellis Road, and traffic was rerouted for roughly two hours. State Troopers were called to the scene at 7:01 a.m. to assist Athol officers with the traffic flow.
The electricity was knocked out, and National Grid was quickly on scene to restore power.
Dale’s Auto Body & Towing removed the vehicle.
