ORANGE — On senior night for the Mahar field hockey team, the Senators beat Athol 6-0 on Thursday night.

Mahar honored seniors Anna Wetherbee, Lilly Fellows and Aimee Dupont before and after the game.

“All three of them have been with me for four years,” Mahar coach Laurie Saisa said. “Great, great girls. They did a phenomenal job being leaders because I don’t have any juniors.”

There were gift bags for the three seniors, and teammate took the time to write a personal note to each senior on poster-board.

The tandem of Wetherbee and Fellows accounted for a lot of the scoring against Athol, which has been the case for most of the season. Fellows had two goals and two assists for Mahar while Wetherbee had a goal and three assists.

Dupont missed some of the season with an injury but is ready for the Senators’ (9-4-2) playoff run.

Mahar also announced Athol’s lone senior Ryley Pond before the game. Pond has had a stellar season in net for Athol (1-12-2). The Red Raiders were outmatched against the Senators, especially on the fast turf.

Aileen Fitzgerald scored and assisted on Mahar’s first two goals which came early in the game. The Senators quick 2-0 lead took some of the life Athol’s attack.

“I think the the turf threw us off a bit because we are just not used to it,” Athol coach Emily Hall said. “It’s a faster paced game. Not that it had a huge impact on the outcome. But we lost momentum when they got a few quick ones.”

A Megan Lundgren goal gave the Senators a 4-0 lead at halftime.

During the second when Mahar’s substitutes got some playing time. Gracie Marsh’s goal made it 5-0 before a final Wetherbee to Fellows goal made it 6-0.

Bella Marigliano got the shutout not having to make a save. The always aggressive Pond made 12 saves for the Red Raiders.
