Playing an afternoon game over the weekend, the Athol girls soccer team lost 2-0 to Gateway Regional at home on Saturday.

Hailey Wrigley made 12 saves for Athol (6-7, 3-6 Pionner North).

The Red Raiders need six points in their last four games to make the playoffs. A win is two points, a tie is a single point.

Athol plays at Frontier on Tuesday, at Mohawk on Wednesday and at Pope Francis on Friday.

“Certainly the latter two games are wins we should have,” Athol coach Tim Cleveland said. “We played a good game against Frontier the first time. But it (playoffs) can happen we are going to have to work for it.”

Athol’s last game of the season is a home game against Mahar Regional on Oct. 29, and a playoff berth could be on the line against the Senators.

Erin Harris scored two goals for Gateway (10-2-1).

Ava Auclair assisted on her first goal in the 35th minute on a left-footed cross.

In the 59th minute, Becca Hyjek gave Harris a long lead pass that she finished.

Becca Herman made one save for the Gators.

Meanwhile, the Athol boys team (8-7) needs just one more win to qualify for the playoffs with three games left against South Hadley, Mahar and Palmer.
