In non-tournament football, the Athol football team hosts Smith Vocational Friday at home.

The Red Raiders (2-6) have lost three straight since beating Mohawk, 50-8, in Week 5, and have struggled stopping the run, giving up over 500 yards combined on the ground over the last two weeks against Frontier and Greenfield.

The Vikings (3-4) have wins over Mohawk, Pathfinder and and McCann Tech this season.

They are a young team,” Athol coach Bill LaRose said. “Same basic offense that we run. They like to pack it in.”

Smith Voke will be highly motivated against the Red Raiders as they will be going for their fourth win of the season which would be a record for the young football program.

Mahar at Mohawk

Mahar (1-7) picked up its first win of the season last week against Franklin Tech and will play at Mohawk, which is coming off a 29-20 loss to Palmer.

“We played the whole game,” Mahar coach Jim Woodward said. ‘Defensively we were tough.”

Mohawk (1-6) has struggled with numbers this season often dressing around 15 players.

“They are big,” Woodward said. “Their running backs are good, they have one that can scoot.”

Fullback Evan Shippee and running backs Jordan Grenier and Ryan Walker handle a number of the carries for Mohawk.
