ATHOL — We have a bashful, yet kind-hearted Navy veteran in our midst who, in his own special way helps bring the joy and wonder of Christmas to underserved youngsters in the area. At the same time, he is also helping his fellow military veterans.
For the last three years, this local Sailor has not revealed his identity, wishing only to generate interest in the Athol Daily News Santa Fund so that the annual goal of $13,500 is met to keep the 71-year-old program running to help impoverished families.
The jolly veteran patiently watches and waits to see what the generous folks in the area donate to the Athol Daily News Santa Fund. He is hopeful that the goal is met, and knows that it is the children who benefit from the generosity of caring people who donate their hard-earned money to the campaign.
Once the season has ended and the grand total is tallied, our anonymous veteran calculates ten percent of the amount. He donates that sum out of his own pocket to the Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center in Gardner, which serves the North Quabbin region.
It is his hope that the idea will nudge donors into giving a little or a lot to the Santa Fund this holiday season. The higher the Santa Fund total rises, the more he donates to the Veterans center. “Any support we can give would be a big help, as many veterans return from service wounded — physically and mentally — and need any support we can provide for them,” he said.

The deadline to sign up your children to receive toys this year is Monday, Dec. 10. Stop by the Daily News office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with proof of residency for all recipients. For information call 978-249-3535.
Santa and his elves will deliver the gifts on Saturday, December 15, beginning at 9 a.m.
