A game against the defending Division 3 Western Massachusetts champions went down to the final seconds for the Mahar basketball team in Easthampton on Monday.
The Senators had a one-point lead with 50 seconds left, but Easthampton came back to win 56-52.
Easthampton’s Ronan Mottor scored five of his 21 points down the stretch for the Eagles. All of the points for Mottor came from the free-throw line.
Deven Patch and Ely Gonzalez did not play against Easthampton due to a coach’s decision.
“I pleased with our effort,” Mahar coach Chad Softic said. “We showed some toughness.”
Mahar was down 41-31 toward the end of the third quarter, but went on a run to take the lead in the fourth.
Charlie Barnes scored 13 points for the Senators (2-2).
Jaden Softic had 11 points with three 3-pointers. Matt Lyesiuk also had double figures with 10 points.
Ware 84, Athol 32 — The Red Raiders struggled on the road against the undefeated Indians.
The combination of Devin Slattery (18 points) and Collin Doty (14 points) was too much for Athol (1-3).
Nathan Heath led the Red Raiders with eight points.
Mark Ferrari returned for Athol, scoring five points with a 3-pointer.
The Athol wrestling team competed at the 19th annual Anthony Lisitano Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Wakefield High School on Saturday and placed 13th out of 17 teams.
Chris Waslaske pinned all five of his opponents at 182 pounds, finishing 5-0 and placing first.
Caleb Cox went 4-1 and took fifth place at 145 pounds.
Thomas Seamans, Tim Yelle and Riley Reid all won their first varsity matches for the program.
