ORANGE — Micalyn Mailloux took care of the offense and Jazmyn Vautour owned the glass for the Mahar girls basketball team in a 53-28 win over Southwick on Friday night.
Mailloux had 17 points and a lot of it was in the open court after a Vautour rebound and outlet pass.
“We were making some wicked outlet passes,” Mailloux said. “Working hard to get layups and fast breaks.”
Vautour finished with nine points and 12 rebounds.
While it was the first lopsided win for the Senators (3-3), the second half was somewhat sloppy. The score was 31-10 at halftime.
“We looked like we were trying to catch up,” Mailloux said. “We didn’t pass the ball around and get a nice shot off, we were just throwing it up. We need to spread out and just waste the clock. Take our time and get a good shot.”
The win was the second straight for Mahar, and coach Larry Fisher attributed the second half to lack of situational awareness.
“It’s tough at this point; we are not used to being ahead,” Fisher said. “At the end it was kind of an ugly thing to watch on both sides. We have to realize that we are ahead and in control. But I was happy with the effort.”
The Senators’ 3-2 zone was highly effective during the game. Mahar swarmed any dribble penetration and it usually led to a turnover.
“They didn’t have a big to put in the middle,” Fisher said. “They had trouble dribbling through that first three.”
Southwick turned to range shooting to counteract the zone, but it was not effective.
Delaney Parker was in the starting lineup for the Senators and scored nine points, including a steal and three-point play in the first quarter.
Mailloux scored seven points in the first quarter as the Senators pulled away early.
Tori Tenney scored five points for Mahar and Siobhan Davis added four points.
Fisher has 199 career wins and will go for 200 against at Athol on Friday.
Hopkins Academy 51, Athol 30 — The Red Raiders (2-5) lost to the Golden Hawks in Hadley.
Haley Bigwood (10 points) and Geca Baptista (eight points) led Athol in scoring.
Sophie Putnam and Taylor Cleveland added four points each.
