ORANGE — In a cold gym on one of the coldest days of the year, the Mahar boys basketball team beat Greenfield High, 49-42, on Monday night.
An issue with the school’s heating system left the gym very chilly for the game.
The Senators warmed up enough in the fourth quarter to overcome a third quarter that let Greenfield back into the game.
“Obviously we struggled in the third,” Mahar coach Chad Softic said. “We couldn’t make a layup and didn’t make our foul shots.”
Jordan Desrosiers (13 points) made three first-half 3-pointers as Mahar built a 28-17 lead going into halftime.
The Senators did a good job getting to the rim in the third, but couldn’t finish with contact and then went 6-for-15 from the free-throw line.
Greenfield’s Ryan Cote (13 points) hit a big 3-pointer off a steal to cut the lead to one nearing the end of the fourth quarter.
The Senators (8-4) got enough plays in the fourth to pull away.
Charlie Barnes and Noaha Chabot both had key assists in the fourth quarter that led to big buckets for the Senators.
Barnes set up Deven Patch (nine points), and Chabot set up Jakob Carron, who both finished near the rim to extend the lead.
A Desrosiers’ floater in the paint made it 43-34 midway through the fourth.
Carron had a double-double for Mahar with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Green Wave scored the first six points of the game before the Senators closed the frame with a 15-4 run.
Mahar’s zone defense was effective throughout, limiting good scoring chances for Greenfield
“Defensively, we were stout,” Softic said.
Owen Phelps had nine points for Greenfield (6-5).
