ATHOL — The Athol boys basketball team stayed with Pioneer Valley Regional for a quarter before the Panthers pulled away and beat the Red Raiders, 70-45, on Tuesday night.

Pioneer Regional (11-1, 5-0 Hampshire South) is in first place in its league.

Mark Ferrari was able to use his size and outside shooting ability to score a season-high 24 points for the Red Raiders.

Ferrari hit three 3-pointers for Athol.

Brymere Edwards, Keegan Lutz, Maysin Tarbell scored four points each for Athol (2-10, 0-5 Hampshire North).

Vincent Gordon and Jaycob Lamarche added three points each.

The Panthers, up by 17 at halftime, put the game away with a 27-9 third quarter.

Girls basketball

Athol 42, Easthampton 36 — The Red Raiders came home with a victory against the Eagles with scoring coming from multiple sources.

The win in Easthampton snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Red Raiders (3-8).

Athol was balanced offensively with scoring from Geca Baptista (11 points), Taylor Cleveland (nine points) and Haley Bigwood (seven points).

Haley Wrigley added six points for Athol.

Mahar 59, Smith Academy 24 — The Senators (7-4) used depth and a complete performance by Jazmyn Vautour to get past the Falcons on the road.

Vautour came close to the rare quadruple-double with seven points, 17 rebounds, seven assists and six steals.

Mahar led 28-8 in the second quarter.

Micalyn Mailloux scored 14 points and has scored in double-figures every game this season

Delaney Parker added 11 points for Mahar.
