Playing a team fighting for a playoff berth, the Mahar boys basketball team turned away Greenfield High School, 62-43, on Friday night in Orange.
“They came out hungry,” Mahar coach Chad Softic said. “But we matched it.”
The Senators (11-5) played efficiently on offense in the first half and used the press to create disruptions for the Green Wave (7-7).
Mahar has now won five straight games and is playing its best basketball at the right time, according to Softic.
“We played our most complete game,” Softic said. ” We are really focused on playing 32 minutes.”
The Senators led throughout and had a 33-13 lead at halftime.
Charlie Barnes played well on both ends of the floor for Mahar with nine points, seven assists and four steals.
Deven Patch (13) and Matt Lyesiuk (11) both scored in double figures.
Lyesiuk had a couple 3-pointers for the Senators. Leading the way on the glass for Mahar was Jakob Carron with 10 rebounds.
Mason Meadows scored 15 points for the Wave.
Mahar travels to Hopkins Academy on Tuesday.
Hopkins Academy 80, Athol 59 — Mark Ferrari continued his impressive season with a career-high 35 points in a loss for the Red Raiders in Hadley.
Ferrari did an effective job getting to the line for the Red Raiders, going 8-for-16 from the stripe.
Ferrari hit three 3-pointers and scored 26 of the points in the second half.
Maysin Tarbell and Brymere Edwards scored seven points each for the Red Raiders (2-12).
Andrew Ciaglo scored 29 points for the Golden Hawks (7-7).
Athol travels to Greenfield on Tuesday.
