With the regular season over, the Mahar indoor track team is honed in on postseason accolades.
The Senators will travel to Northampton for the PVIAC championships at Smith College Friday night, with several competitors going for a ribbon before next week’s state championships.
Kamryn Reilly will compete in three individual events for Mahar: the 55-meter dash, the long jump and the high jump. Mahar has changed the way it practices heading into the championships.
“Our practices are more event based,” Reilly said. “Which is helpful. It is technique specific to what you are qualified.”
Reilly has won consistently all season in all three events, but she will face competition from all divisions on Friday.
“I have been going into every meet as a new thing,” Reilly said. “If you didn’t do that well you can start over.”
Anna Wetherbee will take on the competition in the long jump for the Senators and has benefited from a recent trip to South Hadley.
“Yesterday we went to Mount Holyoke to jump in an actual pit,” Wetherbee said. “Which is really helpful. It’s more of a hands-on practice that’s more focused on jumping. I just want to go in with a positive mindset and jump really well.”
Then there is seventh-grader Carra Fitzgerald, who jumped onto the scene this season in distance events for the Senators.
“After the first day I just have a time I want to get,” Fitzgerald said. “Even if I haven’t gotten it I am always only a few seconds off. I just always have a goal.”
Fitzgerald is running the mile and the 2-mile for Mahar. She owns the school record for Mahar in the 2-mile (12:01.09).
The young runner is experiencing some nerves before her first postseason race.
“I am nervous before every race,” Fitzgerald said. “I always just run my hardest.”
Caroline Chase will run in the 600, while Emma Savoy will compete in the 1,000.
Shot putter Chloe Taddeo will be at the championships as well for the Senators.
Jordyn Berry is set to compete in the high jump.
The Mahar girls will have both relay teams, the 4×400 and the 4×800, competing as well.
For the boys, Liam O’Donnell will run the 2-mile run and the 4×800 relay team will take its shot at the championships.
