The Athol boys indoor track team claimed a share of the Valley South League championship by virtue of three league wins, Friday night at Smith College.
Athol beat Hampshire (56-39), Mohawk (71-22) and Pioneer Regional (52-43). The Red Raiders lost to Greenfield (48-47).
The one-point loss to Greenfield kept the Red Raiders (10-3, 5-1) from winning the title outright.
“We all went in undefeated,” Athol coach David St. Jean said. “We were pretty happy. It’s one of those weird things in track. There’s no scoreboard. I told them on the bus. It’s a rare thing with the size and population of Athol to go back-to-back.”
Mason Barrieau swept first place in two events for the Red Raiders: the 55-meter hurdles (8.74 seconds) and the 300 (37.53).
Dennis St. Jean also swept an event for the Red Raiders, placing first in the 1,000 (2:53.45). St. Jean was first overall in a field of 40 runners.
Seniors Carter Cochran, Zachary Fish, Colby Hume, Jared Rouleau, St. Jean, Noah Aukstikalnis, Anthony Oro, Connor Arpide, Barrieau, Cullen Burbee, Joseph England and Will Roraback each ran in their final league meet for the Athol program.
Hampshire Regional 68, Athol 22; Greenfield 59, Athol 35; Mohawk 51, Athol 42; Athol 52, Pioneer Valley Regional 27 — The Red Raiders (5-7-1) picked up a win against the Panthers in the final girls league meet of the season.
Grace Dufour’s performance in the 300 highlighted the event for Athol.
Dufour swept first place in the 300 (45.73), which was a personal best and also qualified her for the PVIAC championships on Friday.
Seniors Analyse Merlini, Julia Carey and Shelby Mailloux all ran in their final league meet for the Red Raiders.
Mahar 85, Sci-Tech 6 — The Senators girls team easily handled the Cybercats.
Kamryn Reilly was first in the 55 (7.82), the high jump (4 feet, 9 inches) and the long jump (15-3.75).
Reilly tied for first among the field in the high jump, was third overall in the long jump and fourth in the 55.
Chloe Taddeo was third overall (29-3) in the shot put for the Senators.
Caroline Chase picked up first in the 300 (1:52.78).
The Senators recognized seniors Anna Wetherbee, Jordyn Berry, Carissa Johnson, Elina Gordon-Halpern and Katie Galvin, who ran their final league meet.
Mahar 62, Sci-Tech 10 — Liam O’Donnell closed out his league season with a second overall finish in the 2-mile run for the Senators in a win over the Cybercats.
O’Donnell (11:09.50) only trailed Tobias L’Esperance (10:30.24) of Northampton.
Mahar recognized seniors Nathan Sakowicz, Miguel Arce and Thomas Shortis after the meet.
Athol 52, Mount Everett 18; Athol 50, Mount Greylock 16; Athol 36, Shepard Hill 29; Athol 46, Chicopee Comp 30; Spaulding (Vermont) 60; Athol 23 — Chris Waslaske went 5-0 at a Franklin Tech dual meet, wrestling at both 182 and 195 pounds.
The Red Raiders one team loss came to Spaulding.
The five wins came with two forfeits against Greylock and Everett, but Waslakse pinned all three opponents from the other schools with the longest match lasting 1 minute, 50 seconds.
John Hicks (195, 220) and Joey Gray (170) both had unbeaten days with four wins each as well for Athol.
Luke Inniss went 4-1 for the Red Raiders.
