BOSTON — Scott McDonough placed first overall in the long jump for Pioneer Valley Regional School at the MIAA Division 5 Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center on Wednesday.
McDonough’s jump (20-11½) beat second-place finisher Jayden Germana of Cardinal Spellman by an inch.
Mason Barrieau placed fifth in the 600-meter run for the Athol indoor track team.
Barrieau finished with a time of 1 minute, 27 seconds in the event. At the PVIAC Championships, Barrieau had an issue with starting too slow in the same event.
“I went out too fast,” Barrieau said. “I was completely burned by the end. I ran an OK time.”
There was an issue at the podium while accepting his medal after the draining race.
“They were handing out the medals and I had to step off to puke,” Barrieau said. “I ran off and was throwing up.”
Barrieau ran in the 55- meter high hurdles as well, placing 19th (8.83).
“Hurdles are not my main event,” Barrieau said. “I haven’t been doing too hot in them.”
Athol’s Dennis St. Jean finished 11th (2:48.11) out of 24 runners in the 1000-meter run.
Meghan Davis of Mohawk placed fourth overall in the 2-mile run.
“It went all right,” Davis said. “The first mile I was definitely where I wanted to be.”
Davis ran better than her goal of 5 minutes, 30 seconds for the first mile but could not produce the negative split after losing her spot with the front-runners.
“When I lost connection with the main pack … mentally it affected me a little bit,” Davis said. “It’s difficult. I am working on negative splitting the second mile. It’s something I am working torward.”
Carra Fitzgerald broke her own school record in the mile-run once again for Mahar, placing seventh (5:31.47) among 26 runners.
Mahar’s Kamryn Reilly tied for fifth (4-10) in the high jump, ninth (16-2¾) in the long jump and 24th (7.81) in the 55-meter dash.
“I probably didn’t do as well as I could have,” Reilly said.
Teammate Anna Wetherbee was 16th (15-06) in the long jump for Mahar.
Greenfield’s Crescens Iavorschi placed 15th (6.91) in the 55-meter dash, while Victoria Marin placed 14th (15-8½) in the long jump for the Wave.
Mahar’s Chloe Taddeo was 17th (29-1½) in the girls shot put, while Athol’s Rashelly Dalmau-Gonzalez was 22nd (27-8½).
