ATHOL — The Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church is organizing a party to celebrate Fat Tuesday on March 5 at 6:30 p.m. Also known as Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Carnivale and Pancake Day, Fat Tuesday is a joyous celebration that takes place the day before Ash Wednesday, to mark the start of the Christian fasting season of Lent.
This year, the church, at 40 Island St. is hosting its second annual Fat Tuesday Celebration. Friends, family, neighbors — the entire community — are invited to this free party. Fellowship Hall, located in the church basement, will be decorated in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, gold and green. And, of course there will be plenty of beads.
Local musicians Steve Babineau and friends will provide music bringing lively jazz sounds to downtown Athol. There will be room for dancing and light refreshments will be served. Masks and costumes are welcome, but not necessary. The event is free, family friendly and open to the community.
Pastor Mary Owen says, “Last year we had a wonderful time and we are looking forward to an evening of great music and fun with old friends and hopefully some new ones – come join us!” The party is drug- and alcohol-free. It is asked that those interested in attending RSVP by calling 978-249-6677, or visit church’s Fat Tuesday Party event page on Facebook @StarrettMemorialUMC. The church is accessible and parking is available in the lot behind the church, the library parking lot or on Island and Marble streets.
