Olivia Deane shook off a first-inning run, and the sophomore pitcher kept visiting Mohawk Trail Regional High School off the board the rest of the way to lift Frontier Regional School to a solid 5-1 victory in a Franklin County League softball game played Monday at Zabek Field in South Deerfield.
Deane struck out three and walked just one in a complete-game effort in the circle for the Red Hawks (6-2, 3-1), and she added a pair of hits and an RBI at the plate.
“She got ahead of hitters well and was consistently hitting her spots,” Frontier coach Gary Deane said of his pitcher, who threw 50 of her 72 pitches for strikes.
Mohawk (5-3, 1-2) took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first, as Reagan Dupree drove in Ashley Reynolds to get the visitors off and running.
Frontier tied it with a run in the bottom of the second, and took control of the game in the fourth. Olivia Vecellio (fielder’s choice) and Deane (single) drove in runs to give the hosts a 3-1 lead, and Macy Ring smacked a two-run home run over the fence in left field to give the Hawks a 5-1 advantage.
That would be enough for Deane, who retired the side in order in both the fifth and seventh innings, and worked around a jam in the sixth to seal the deal.
Lily Spencer was 3-for-3 with a double in the win for Frontier, which held an 8-5 edge in the hits department.
Dupree had two of Mohawk’s five hits, while Mya Lesieur, Caitlin Johnston and Grace Ward also added singles.
The teams meet again on May 15 in Buckland.
Greenfield 9, Pioneer 1 — Samantha Smith clubbed a two-run home run, and Olivia Joy struck out 11 against no walks to help Greenfield cruise past Pioneer, 9-1, in an FCL contest under the lights at Vets Field on Monday night.
The Green Wave (5-1, 3-0) got on the board with a four-spot in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of four hits, a walk and two errors to jump on Pioneer hurler Steph Scoville.
The lead grew to 6-0 after four, and that would be plenty for Joy, who allowed just two hits in her seven innings of work. The senior allowed just a single to Kensey Gibson and an RBI double to Scoville in the sixth inning.
Kaitlin Lavoine had a big night for Greenfield. The freshman outfielder registered three hits, including a triple. Smith, Audrey Bresciano and Racquel Provost all added two hits, with Smith driving in three runs in the win. Raegan Hickey and Kelsey Richardson each singled and drove in a run.
“We hit the ball much better today. We hit it hard,” Greenfield coach Rian Lovett said. “We’ve been working on hitting. Kaitlin, that was probably her best offensive performance. It’s nice to see her hit the ball and see some of these young players come around.”
Scoville took the loss, striking out five and walking three for the Panthers (2-4, 1-2).
Athol 25, Franklin Tech 1 – Athol High School’s Lindsey LeBlanc, Haley Bigwood and Reily Polana combined for a no-hitter against Franklin Tech at home on Monday.
LeBlanc pitched two innings with five strikeouts, while Bigwood pitched an inning before Polana closed out the game with two innings of work.
Polana had two strikeouts for the Red Raiders. Bigwood has pitched for the Red Raiders before but Polana is new to the circle.
“It was great to get Reily some work,” Athol coach Sharon Chauvette said.
Bigwood’s bat carried the offense, going 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and six RBI for Athol (3-3).
Polana had two hits with two RBIs, while Rozlyn Nelson added a double with two RBI.
Haley Wrigley added a triple. Catcher Sadey Lehtomaki singled as well for Athol.
Helping her own cause early, LeBlanc had a double with two RBI. Kendall Deleo, Jenna St. Cyr, Christa Cucchi and Lexi Forte also knocked in runs for the Red Raiders.
Abby Corey went four innings in the circle for the Eagles, striking out five. Jocelyn Crowningshield scored a run for Franklin Tech (2-3).
Greenfield 6, Hampshire 0 — There was no look-ahead factor for Greenfield High School on Monday.
One day ahead of a showdown with powerhouse Frontier, the Green Wave handled their business in the form of a 6-0 shutout of Hampshire in an independent contest in Westhampton.
Senior Owen Phelps struck out six and walked just one, scattering five hits — all singles — in a complete-game shutout on the mound. His defense backed him up, as Greenfield finished without an error.
“It was probably our most complete game offensively, defensively, and Owen pitched well,” Greenfield skipper Tom Suchanek said. “He got ahead of a lot of guys. And we got some timely hits, which we haven’t done a lot of in past games.”
Greenfield (5-3) led 1-0 until the fifth inning, when it scored two in the inning and added three insurance markers in the fifth. David Carey continued his torrid start to the season, smacking three hits, including a double. Hunter Campbell had two doubles and two RBIs, while Ryan Cote also had two hits and an RBI. Nate Haselton and Phelps added a hit and an RBI apiece.
The Wave head to South Deerfield for a 4 p.m. Hampshire League West meeting with Frontier (5-1).
Mahar 7, Smith Voke 5 — Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, Mahar sprung to life on Monday.
The host Senators cut into the deficit with a three-spot in the frame, and took their first lead of the game with three more in the fifth inning en route to a 7-5 independent victory over Smith Voke in Orange.
Mahar’s Jacob Berry settled in after some early-inning struggles, and wound up striking out 12 batters in a complete-game effort on the mound. Berry walked three and allowed five hits in seven innings of work to earn the win.
Jacob Tenney and Andrew Herk both went 2-for-3 to pace the Senators (4-2) offensively, while Joey Brozell drove in a pair of runs and Tenney and Logan Dodge each added an RBI. Mahar wound up with a 7-5 edge in hits, and the hosts did not commit an error in the victory.
Pioneer 17, FC Tech 2 (6) — A late offensive barrage helped Pioneer pull away from Franklin Tech for a 17-2 independent baseball victory Monday afternoon in Northfield.
The Panthers held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning when a six-run effort helped the hosts begin to pull away. Seven more runs in the sixth ended the game.
“As often as (Franklin Tech) was putting runners on base, the guys knew they had to swing the bats,” Pioneer coach Jordan Branson said. “It was going to be who would break it open first and the guys decided they wanted it to be them and they made it happen. We had a lot of two-out RBIs today.”
Franklin Tech scored only two runs despite piling up 14 hits. Pioneer had 16 hits, but also took advantage of seven walks from Franklin Tech pitching. The Panthers did not make an error to help winning pitcher Nate Mousseau get out of several jams. On one ocassion, the Eagles loaded the bases with nobody out but three ground balls to the infield resulted in three straight putouts at home plate.
“They had good hitters and put pressure on,” Branson said of the Eagles. “Even though they kept hitting and hitting, we were able to make the plays in the field and keep them scoring.”
Jacob Quinn had a big day with the stick, piling up five hits including a double, five RBIs and four stolen bases, one of which was a straight steal of home early in the game. As a team, Pioneer stole 14 bases on the day. Mousseau had two hits and two RBIs, and Jack Loud had two hits and three RBIs. Ryan Potter singled and plated two runs, and Troy Emond had two hits and one RBI.
Garret Cole had three hits for Franklin Tech, while Nate Pelletier had two hits and an RBI. Nate Sciandra, Max Charest and Mike Patnode each had two hits, and Sim Maniatty had one hit and one RBI.
Mousseau struck out two and didn’t walk a batter in four innings to earn the victory, and Hubbard pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Sciandra struck out seven and walked seven in four innings to endure the loss.
