Greenfield High School was digging the long ball on Monday afternoon.
Three home runs from three different players helped spark the Green Wave offense during a 14-5 victory over Frontier Regional School in a Franklin County League softball game at Zabek Field in South Deerfield.
Samantha Smith, Raegan Hickey and Audrey Bresciano each went deep for the Wave (6-1). Greenfield scored five times in the first inning and led 10-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
Smith also doubled twice and finished with four hits and five RBIs in the win. Hickey had three hits and two RBIs, and Bresciano had two hits and two RBIs. Rachel Dodge, Racquel Provost and Gianna Conte each added two hits, with Conte doubling in one attempt. Olivia Joy struck out nine and allowed four walks and 10 hits in seven innings for the win.
Olivia Deane struck out one and allowed one walk and 17 hits in the loss. Charlotte Doulette doubled and drove in one run for Frontier (8-3), and Olivia Deane had two hits and two RBIs. Lily Spencer added three hits and one RBI, and Olivia Vecellio had two hits.
Mahar 9, Mohawk 7 — Skyler Dodge belted two home runs on Monday afternoon including a walk-off two-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh inning and Mahar defeated Mohawk, 9-7, in a FCL softball game in Orange.
Dodge also roped a three-run bomb in the fifth inning for the Senators (5-5 overall, 2-3 FCL), who trailed 7-3 after four innings but came back to win. Dodge had a monster game in the victory with seven RBIs to her name. Jordyn Berry had three hits and one RBI, and Lani deDiego doubled.
Megan Rich went the distance in the win with two strikeouts and no walks.
Grace Ward singled and drove in two runs for Mohawk, and Reagan Dupree had three hits, including a double, and one RBI. Morgan Roccio had two hits and one RBI, and Cailtlin Johnston, Mya Lesieur and Nola Bloomer each had one hit and one RBI.
Lesieur struck out one and walked one in relief to suffer the loss.
Athol 10, Pioneer 0 — Lindsey Leblanc struck out nine in a complete-game shutout to lead Athol to a 10-0 victory over Pioneer in a FCL softball game Monday afternoon in Northfield.
Leblanc allowed just two hits and one walk in her gem. She also had a pair of hits.
Sadey Lehtomaki led the offense with two hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Jenna St. Cyr had two hits and two RBIs, Haley Bigwood doubled and drove in a run, and Lexi Forte tripled.
Steph Scoville struck out 12 but also walked nine in the loss. Scoville tripled for Pioneer, while Tayla Sadlowski had one hit.
Smith Voke 18, FC Tech 3 — Ashley Schabacker struck out 11 and allowed four hits and one walk in five innings and Smith Voke defeated Franklin Tech, 18-3, in Tri-County League softball action Monday in Turners Falls.
Schabacker also doubled and drove in three runs for the Vikings, who scored six times in the second and eight times in the third.
Hailey Jackman tripled and drove in two runs for the Eagles (2-6), while Jocelyn Crowningshield, Shannon Kurkulonis and Emma Paulin each had one hit. Abi Corey struck out two and walked 12 in three innings in the loss.
Greenfield 90, Mahar 55 — Crescens Iavorschi and Theo Popusoi each won two events on Monday and Greenfield beat Mahar, 90-55, in a Intercounty League boys track & field meet at Conway Track in Greenfield.
Iavorschi won the 100 meter dash in 11.4 seconds, and the 200 in 23.5. He was also a part of Greenfield’s 4 x 100 relay team, which won in 48.2 seconds. Popusoi, who was also part of the 4 x 100 relay, won the 110 high hurdles in 16.4 seconds, and the pole vault at 13-6.
Aaron Do won the 800 (2:18.3) for Greenfield, Jackson Brown won the triple jump (39-3¾) and Israel Gallardo won the high jump (5-2). Greenfield won a pair of throwing events as Emanuil Rahubenco won the javelin at 155-2, and Bailey Semonelli won the shot put at 35-11½.
Justin deDiego and Riley Drew each won two events for the Senators. Drew captured the 400 (55.9) and the long jump (19-8¾), while deDiego won the 400 hurdles (1:07.9) and the 2-mile (11:59.6). Peter Currie added a win in the discus at 92-1.
FC Tech 80, Athol 59 — Ryan Duclos swept the three throwing events and Franklin Tech defeated Athol, 80-59, in a IL boys track & field meet Monday in Turners Falls.
Duclos won the shot put (40-1½), discus (92-5), and javelin (123-9) for the Eagles. Justin Dobias won the high jump (5-2) and pole vault (8-0), and Donte Rosewarne won both the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash (24.8). Zack Conway added a win in the 400 hurdles in 66.6 seconds.
Mason Barrieau won three events to pace the Red Raiders as he took the long jump (18-1½), triple jump (38-9) and 110 hurdles (16.9). Noah Aukstikalnis won the 400 (60.3) and the 2-mile (12:54), Anthony Marcucci captured the mile (5:16.3), and Dennis St. Jean won the 800 (2:12.4).
Vaultapalooza
Pioneer hosted its annual Vaultapalooza pole vault championship on Sunday.
Frontier’s Dan Dejnak won the event with a leap of 10 feet, 6 inches. Pioneer’s Gavin Curtis (9-6), Jake Walker (7-6) and Griffin deRuiter (6-0) came in second through fourth respectively.
Greenfield 3, PV Christian 2 — Win one for Victor.
That was the motto midway through Greenfield’s boys tennis match with Pioneer Valley Christian on Monday after No. 1 singles player Victor Ivancev had to retire in the second set of his match with Andrew Taft.
Brandon Siow heeded that call as he came back from one set down to win a three-setter at No. 2 singles and the Green Wave edged the Eagles, 3-2, in a Tri-County League match at the Davis Street Tennis Courts in Greenfield.
Ivancev was leading Taft in the match at first singles. After winning the first set 6-4, he did find himself in a 0-2 hole in the second set when he heard a pop in his shoulder and was forced to retire, giving Taft the victory.
Siow came up with the huge point at second singles where he faced Kevin Sharpe. After falling 6-3 in the first set, Siow came back to win 6-4, 6-2 in the next two sets to pick up a huge victory.
Greenfield also swept the doubles matches in relative ease. Jacob Frank and Gabriel Larouche beat Daniel Doktor and Cayden Garvey 6-2, 6-1 at first doubles, and Daniel Pena-Chadee and Petru Cojucaru 6-0, 6-2 at second doubles.
Connor Pedigree suffered a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss to Nathaniel Brosseau at third singles.
Palmer 4, Mohawk 1 — Paige King won at third singles but Mohawk suffered a 4-1 loss to Palmer in an independent girls tennis match Monday in Buckland.
King earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Amelia Bachand on the day.
Will White beat Avery Dupree 6-1, 6-2 at first singles, and Emma Martin bested Sienna Lewis 6-3, 6-0 at second singles.
St. Mary’s 4, Turners Falls 1 — Steph Peterson defeated Erin Olearcek in three sets but Turners Falls dropped a 4-1 decision to St. Mary’s in an independent girls tennis match Monday in Turners Falls.
Peterson earned a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory to earn the lone point for the Thunder.
Izzy Farrick lost to Pamela Murray at second singles 6-2, 6-1 for Turners, while the second doubles team of Mercedes Bailey and Emily Dennison suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Caroline Leahy and Catherine Seklecki.
Athol 3, Belchertown 1 — Zach Aldrich had 15 kills and 25 digs to help Athol to a 21-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-22 victory over Belchertown in an East Division boys volleyball game Monday in Athol.
Joey Grey had 14 kills for the Red Raiders, while Colby Soltysik had 30 assists, four aces, nine digs and three kills. Parker Deleo had eight digs, two aces and three kills, Matt Willhite had 23 digs, two aces and one kill, and Owen Willhite and Evan Blake each had seven digs.
