Another day, another set of locals qualifying for prestigious tournaments.
Both Franklin County golfers in Wednesday’s New England Amateur qualifier at Elmcrest Country Club in East Longmeadow earned spots in next month’s championship proper.
Crumpin-Fox Club’s Nathan Patterson, who plays collegiately at Franklin Pierce University, shot a 1-over par round of 70, good enough for a six-way tie for second place in Wednesday’s qualifying field. The Conway resident recorded three birdies to go against two bogeys and a double-bogey in his round, finishing two shots back of top-finisher Harrison Thayer of Vermont National Country Club (1-under 68).
Joining Patterson in next month’s field is Country Club of Greenfield’s Connor Piecuch, who qualified right on the cut line after shooting an 8-over par 77. Piecuch finished in a four-way tie for 22nd place, as the top 26 finishers in Wednesday’s field earned spots in the championship. Piecuch, the son of CCG professional Kevin Piecuch, just wrapped up his freshman season at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Penn.
The 90th New England Amateur Championship is scheduled for July 23-25 at The Quechee Club (Vt.). Wednesday’s qualifier was the last of four qualifying tournaments.
