The Turners Falls 14U softball team fell to Agawam, 15-2, in a Suburban League game at Turners Falls High School, Thursday. 

The game closed out the regular season for Turners, with playoffs beginning Monday. 

Holly Myers had a strong performance for Turners, striking out five on the mound and going 3-for-3 with an RBI at the plate. 

Olivia Stafford was 2-for-3 and scored a run and had a solid day behind the plate for Turners. 

Morgan Dobias was 2-for-3, Skylei Lapan had a hit and an RBI, Cordelia Guerin had a hit and scored a run and Keira Stevens and Kendra Campbell each hit safely. 

Softball

Suburban League

Mackenzie Paulin pitched a complete game Thursday, striking out 16 and allowing a mere three hits in the Greenfield Grizzlies 11-3 win over the Agawam Inferno in a 12U Suburban League softball game. 

The victory clinched the No. 2 seed and a home playoff game for the Grizzlies, which will be Monday at 5:45 at Murphy Park, with the opponent yet to be determined. 

At the plate, Paulin and Margarette Howland each had two hits and an RBI, while Nina Holden added a pair of RBIs. 

Anna Bucala and Stella Verlander each had a hit and batted in a run, Amelia Pierce and Eva Ferreira both hit safely and Ellis Benitez had an RBI. 

Football

Holyoke Passing League

The Athol football team shutout Commerce, 12-0, at Excel Sports Academy’s 7-on-7 passing league at Holyoke High School on Thursday. 

Riley Paine went 4-for-9 for 69 yards for the Red Raiders.  Paine tossed a seven-yard touchdown to Vincent Gordon to open the scoring on Athol’s first drive. 

Keegan Lutz caught two passes for 58 yards.  

On Athol’s final drive, Lutz played quarterback and got the Red Raiders into the end zone on two consecutive plays.   The first was a 14-yard completion to Paine, before a 26-yard touchdown to Jacob Smith. 

Athol lost its next game to South Hadley, 30-12.

Paine connected with Lutz on a 40-yard touchdown against the Tigers. The Red Raiders (8-4) got another touchdown when Paine found Derek Erali for a 26-yard touchdown.

Golf 

52nd Ouimet Memorial 

South Deerfield’s Jacob Zaranek shot a 1-over par 75 on Wednesday, putting him at 5-over-par and finishing tied for 14th at the 52nd Ouimet Memorial Tournament at Boston Golf Club. 

Zaranek eagled the first hole of the day and birdied holes 10, 12, 15 and 17. A triple-bogey on the par-4 9th and a double-bogey on 13 derailed the otherwise strong performance. 

CFC  

Marty Stinson’s plus-4 quota gave her first place in the women’s league at the Crumpin-Fox Club, Wednesday. 

Julie Schonbrun took second with a plus-2 while Maggie Haigis, Elaine Goodhind, Peg Barnes and Kris Shae tied for third with a plus-1. 

Stinson won closest to pin on No. 3 (17 feet, one inch) and No. 9 (18 feet, 11 inches). 

In the men’s league, Brendan Creagh scored a plus-10, giving him a clear-cut first place finish in the Blue Tee group. 

Scott Dorval’s plus-4 was good for second and Ryan Martin, Cam Merrigan, Douglas Taylor and Chris Stoddard all tied for third with a score of plus-3. 

Martin and Creagh each won skins while Stoddard won closest to the pin on No. 9 (nine feet, two inches) and Mark Waskiewicz won it on No. 3 (59 feet, nine inches). 

In the Gold Tee group, Phil Phillips took first with a score of plus-2, followed by Dave Puchalski in second with a plus-1 finish. 

Doug Taylor won a skin and Richard Degray won closest to the pin on No. 3 (21 feet, three inches) and No. 9 (six feet). 

Greenfield Elks 

Bob Ferris and Vinnie Melendez took first with 65.5 points in the Greenfield Elks Golf League at the Country Club of Greenfield, Thursday. 

Greg Call and Bob Zaikowski tied with John Cariddi and Stan Maynard for second with 64 points while Peter Kuzmeskus and Jamie L Bozek split third place with Mike Duclos and Sharon Rawson with both pairing scoring 63.5 points. 

Dave McDonald won closest to the pin (12 feet, six inches). 

Ashfield Golf Club

Joyce Charland has the low gross score of 40 on the ladies side in a scramble at the Ashfield Community Golf Club Mixed League, Thursday. 

Katie Benedetti had the low net of 32 on the women’s side. Bob Jillson’s 42 was the low gross for men’s and Terry Norwood shot a 40, the low net score on the men’s side. 

Tennis 

GTA

The Greenfield Tennis Association is holding a Mixed Doubles tennis event Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Beacon Field courts starting at 9 a.m.  The entry fee is 5 dollars per team for members and 10 dollars for non-members.  All fees go to maintaining Greenfield’s clay tennis courts.  Please bring an unopened can of tennis balls.  Format will depend on the number of teams. Swimming 

Montague mini-camp

The competitive style mini-camp takes place Aug. 12-15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Turners Falls High School pool.

The camp has a competitive swimming approach, and is not a learn-to-swim program. Participants should be somewhat knowledgeable of all strokes and wish to broaden those skills for competitive team swimming. The cost is $45 per swimmer for Montague residents and $50 for non-residents.

Soccer

CVSOA course

The Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association will conduct an instructional course for new referees in August.

Members of the CVSOA referee scholastic soccer matches in Hampshire and Franklin Counties during September, October and November.

CVSOA members must be 18 years of age or older and pass a criminal background review.
