Beginning today, Warwick’s Maggie Fellows takes center stage in South America.

The former Northfield Mount Hermon standout and St. Lawrence University alum begins competition at the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru. Fellows is a part of Team USA’s rowing squad, and she’ll open action with qualifying heats in the women’s double sculls today with the finals set for Thursday. Fellows is also competing in the quadruple sculls, with opening heats on Wednesday and the finals set for Saturday.

The 28-year-old rowed at NMH and then St. Lawrence before training at Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Vermont. She coached and trained at NMH for a year after that, and now trains out of Long Beach, Calif.

Last August, Fellows and double sculls partner Julia Lonchar won the U.S. Pan Am trials, then qualified the boat in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil three months later for this summer’s big event. The duo are on the quadruple sculls team with Sydney Taylor and Keara Twist.

Holyoke Passing League

The playoffs started perfectly for the Athol High School passing league team at Holyoke High School on Monday night.

The Red Raiders opened their playoff contest with an immediate touchdown against Agawam, but ended up falling, 22-12, to the Brownies

Keegan Lutz threw the 40-yard touchdown to Jacob Smith, who made some quick moves and took off down the right sideline for the Red Raiders.

After the playoff loss, Athol finished its season 8-5.

“It was a great way to get out here and get some extra practice,” Lutz said. “Especially getting the younger guys working with upperclassmen. It helped us a lot with reps and I am sure it will benefit going into the season.

Lutz also caught a 40-touchdown on a throw from Riley Paine.

It was the first time Lutz and his teammates played Excel Sports Academy’s 7-on-7 passing league.

“I have never done anything like this with any other team,” Lutz said. “I hope it will be good for us and build some chemistry.”

Lutz went 1-for-2 for 40 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Paine finished 2-for-8 with 50 yards. Caleb Cox had one reception for 10 yards.
