The U.S. Postal Service will issue a three ounce rate (85 c) stamp on Sept. 12 to note the bicentennial of the birth of poet Walt Whitman. The self-adhesive stamp in the Literary Arts commemorative series will be issued in panes of twenty.
Huntington Station, NY will be the official first day city for this stamp.
The coin show normally held in Auburn on the second Sunday of the month will not be held until October.
The last series of the big Brimfield flea markets for this year will come to an end this weekend. These are located along a mile of U.S. Route 20 in that town, and there is a fee to park almost anywhere in town near the events.
In last week’s column, I wrote about a special postcard find I made at one of these shows years ago. Another time, in the field I was set up at, I was shopping around before the field was open to the public.
I was shown the largest post card album I’ve ever seen, about as thick as my hand is long. The dealer wanted a high price for it, but there were many cards in the album that I wanted, so I made out a check to pay for purchasing it.
I took more than half of the cards out of the album to price for individual resale, and replaced them with other duplicate cards from my stock. At the following Brimfield show, I was set up at a building there featuring only postcard dealers. An eBay seller bought the album from me, and later told me that he had made a profit selling cards out of it!
