The league’s newest team, Wormtown Trading, earned their first win of the season on Sunday in the Greenfield Men’s Touch Football League, scoring three fourth-quarter touchdowns to capture a 19-6 win over Frosty’s Raiders at Green River Field.
Quarterback Ricky Craver led the way, finding Tyler Charbonneau with two touchdown strikes while George Correa grabbed the extra point. Correa also played well on defense, grabbing an interception and taking it to paydirt for a score. The Raiders received a touchdown catch from Tim Boryzka, and he also added an interception.
• Elsewhere, defending champion Hubie’s Tavern rolled to a 28-6 win over Taylor’s Wolfpack behind a four-touchdown performance from quarterback Pat Viencek. Jeremy Benz started the scoring, catching a five-yard TD, then Viencek connected with Austin Watroba and Cody Underwood in the second half to finalize the performance.
Taylor’s started the scoring with a Nick Aldrich to Jalen Sanders 8-yard TD strike. Sanders added two interceptions on defense, and Kris Quiles-Santiago also had a pick.
• In other action, a defensive battle went to Sirum as the squad picked up a 6-2 win over Travel Kuz. Parker Hickey starred on both sides of the ball for Sirum, running in the game’s only touchdown on a 13-yard scamper. He also had an interception.
Max Pirozhchov recorded two interceptions for Travel Kuz, and Chris Dodge put two points on the board with a safety.
Soccer
The Athol Royalston Middle School boys soccer team defeated Four Rivers Charter School, 6-4, on Tuesday.
Benjamin Kerney scored a hat trick for Athol, with Ethan Heuer, Cooper Sonnabend and Logen Girard scoring the remainder of the goals.
Matthew Legard had over 10 saves in the first half to keep the game in hand for Athol.
CCG Women’s
Jane Plumley recorded 39 points in Stableford scoring, leading the way in the A Flight at the Country Club of Greenfield’s Women’s 18-Hole League on Tuesday.
Ann McHugh was right behind with 38 points. Michelle Hazlett won the B Flight with 36 points, followed by Carla Bernier with 30.
Hole-in-one alert
Greenfield’s Dave McDonald notched the seventh hole-in-one of his golfing career on Tuesday.
At the Country Club of Greenfield, McDonald used a 7-iron to ace No. 5. The feat was witnessed by Tom Moore, Ed Shaw and Warren Welch — all phone company retirees who have played together for 30 years.
United Church of
Bernardston tourney
The foursome of Will Stratford, Dick Clough, Harry Kennedy and Travis Clough captured first place with a 60 to win the United Church of Bernardston Golf Tournament at Northfield Golf Course over the weekend.
The team of Jon Snow, Steve Roy, Sally Malloy and Dan Malloy took second with a 62, followed in third place by Gene LaCoy, Bob LaCoy, Sandy LaCoy and Fred Llewelyn with a 63.
Bob Tombs was closest to the line, while Cynthia Marchand had the women’s longest drive and Wayne Conant recorded the men’s longest drive. Alex Westfall was closest to the pin at 9 feet, 6 inches.
Greenfield Rec League
The Greenfield Recreation Department Tennis League came to a conclusion over the weekend, with Steve Pedigree taking first in the Top Spin Division and Tim Prevost taking second.
Ken Hubbard was the winner of the Valley Division, with Richard Corey taking second.
In the Lob Division, Willy Rose was the winner and Paul Beaulieu took second.
“We had 24 players play,” Andrew Varnon said of the league. “It was another successful season.”
In other tennis news, the Greenfield doubles tournament began Monday night, with Pedigree and Hubbard defeating Rose and Petru Cojocaru to advance to the finals. In the title match on Tuesday, Pedigree and Hubbard defeated Varnon and Daniel Pena-Chadee, 6-1, 6-3.
FCHA
The Franklin County Hockey Association Midgets Lenois team had its first games of the season over the weekend, dropping both contests.
Lenois fell to the Capitals, 6-3, on Sunday at Collins-Moylan Rink. Booie Harris had a pair of goals and Sam Knight added a goal himself.
Derek Lenois, Adam Savoy, Matthew Willhite and Owen Willhite each picked up an assist.
On Saturday, Lenois lost to Pioneer Valley Grey, 5-3.
Savoy and Knight scored in the loss, with Lenois, Owen Willhite and Casey Hoffman picking up assists.
Athol JV
The Athol boys JV soccer team fell to South Hadley, 7-1, over the weekend.
Tony Carbone had the lone goal, which was assisted by Gabe Gois.
Monadnock
Ben Byrne of Greenfield picked up his fourth win of the season in the Monadnock’s Sportsman Modified division on Saturday, taking the lead on lap nine and cruising to victory.
Jake Pulchalski of Whately earned his 11th win in Young Guns completion with Turners Falls driver J.D. Stockwell taking third.
Don Maynard 5-miler
The 25th Annual Don Maynard 5 Mile Road Race and 2.5 mile walk is set for Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m.
