The Mohawk Trail girls cross country team secured its  second straight Pioneer North championship with a pair of wins in Northampton on Tuesday.

Mohawk Trail had the first eight finishers in the race.  

It is coach Joe Chadwick’s 24th league championship.

The Warriors defeated Smith Voke 15-50, and Hampden Charter, 15-50, with Erika Szewczyk placing first overall in 22 minutes 52, seconds.

Erika Looman (22:52, second), Carli Cusimano (23:31, third), Savannah Simmons (23:41, fourth) and Sierra Upton (23:41, fifth) rounded out the top five for the Warriors. 

Frontier 15, Palmer 50;  Frontier 15, Westfield Tech 50 – The Red Hawks girls had the top-10 finishers overall in a pair of home wins over the Panthers and the Tigers.

Abigail Howard (19:06), Leah Gump (19:56), Adrienne Joseph (19:57), Sasha Malo (20:12) and Leah Vichi placed in the top five.   

Mohawk 15, Smith Voke 50; Mohawk 28, Hampden Charter 29 – Dennis Simmons was the overall winner (18:52)  in the boys’ race in Northampton in two wins for the Warriors.  

 Quinton Romer (21:21) and Sean O’Day (21:21) finished fourth and fifth respectively. 

Frontier 25, Palmer 33; Frontier 19, Mahar 44; Mahar 28, Westfield Tech 29; Palmer 22, Mahar 33 – In the boys’ race in South Deerfield, Gehrig Brynda was the top finisher for the Red Hawks in third place (15:13) in two wins over the Panthers and the Senators.

Patrick Boyden placed fifth for the Red Hawks (16:21).

Thor Mead was the top finisher for the Senators in fifth (15:47), as the Senators picked up a win over Westfield Tech.  

Girls soccer

Jenna Thebeau nets winner in Eagles’ comeback

 The Franklin County Tech girls soccer team came back from a one-goal deficit at halftime to beat St. Mary’s on the road in an independent match in Westfield.

Jenna Thebeau scored on a direct kick in the 66th minute to give the Eagles the win.

Rylee Ares tied the game in the second half for Franklin Tech. 

Frontier 1, Athol 0 –  The Red Hawks slipped past the Red Raiders on the road in a Pioneer North match.

Jessica Wrisley scored a second half goal for the Red Hawks. Siomara Green made five saves in the shutout.

Haley Wrigley stopped nine shots for the Red Raiders.

Pioneer Valley Regional 3, Pope Francis 1 – Azemina Cecinjanin, Paige Loughman and Annie Browning all scored for the Panthers in a road win in Pioneer South play.

Stephanie Scoville picked up an assist, with Anna Picard making eight saves in net. 

Boys soccer

Lashtur strikes twice in win

Sam Lashtur’s two goals propelled  the Franklin Tech soccer team in a 5-0 home win over Commerce in an independent match. 

The Eagles scored four times in the first half in the one-sided affair. 

Tony Barilone (assist), Garrett Cole (assist) and Jake Burnett also scored for the Eagles. 

Dylan Mallett picked up an assist. 

Matt Regnier made three saves in the shutout.

Monument Mt. 2, Mahar Regional 1 – Logan Dodge made 10 saves for the Senators in a loss at the Woodward Complex in independent match against the Spartans. 

James Temple scored on an assist from Cole Johnson for Mahar. 

Easthampton 5, Pioneer 0 — The Panthers surrendered a goal right before the first half buzzer and then two goals in the 50th minute to fall in the independent match in Northfield. 

Carter Daughdrill had two of the Eagles’ goals. Jacob Quinn made 16 saves in goal for Pioneer. 

“We played them tight in the first half,” Panther coach Don Fraser said, “but giving up a goal in the final seconds of the first half definitely hurt. Easthampton is a very good and deep team.”

Field Hockey

Offense missing for Mohawk Trail

The Mohawk Trail Regional field hockey team lost to Smith Academy on the road in a Bi-County match up.

The Warriors managed only one shot against the Falcons.

Volleyball

Dabney Rollins paces Turners Falls

The Turners Falls volleyball team got 14 kills from Dabney Rollins in a 3-1 win at Easthampton. 

Set scores were 25-21, 25-17 20-25 and 25-23 in the independent match.

Setter Hailey Bogusz had 19 assists for the Thunder, adding two kills and six aces. 

Madison Liimatainen chipped in with five kills.

Leading the defense was Lindsay Whiteman with eight digs.

Pioneer Valley Christian 3, Franklin Tech 1 – The Eagles fell on the road,  25-14, 25-12, 20-25 and 25-22, in Metro league play.

Kelly Trudeau had five aces, four digs and a kill.

Mackenzie Martell paced the defense with seven digs while Lilian Poirier added six aces, seven digs and four assists.

Athol 3, Pioneer Valley Regional 0 –  The Red Raiders swept the Panthers, 25-19, 25-14 and 25-17, in a Northern match. 

Alana Redeker had four aces and five kills for Pioneer.

Lexi Forte set up 10 assists for the Red Raiders and added six aces.

Shaelynn Doherty picked up nine aces with four kills.

Mahar 3, Chicopee 1 — Saylor Kegans had seven kills and a block as the Senators raced past the Pacers 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16 in an independent match in Chicopee. 

Hailie Meeker had two kills and five aces in the win, while Madison Harrington added two kills, 10 assists and eight aces and Quincey Drew had four kills and four digs. 

Golf

Green Wave cruise against Falcons

Greenfield stayed hot on the fairway, with Ryan Cote earning two points in No. 1 with a team-low 37 as the Green Wave came away with a 20-4 Bi-County East win over winless Smith Academy at the Country Club of Greenfield. 

Gabe Larouche earned the Greenfield 3½ points from No. 2 with a 44 and Jake Cote earned another three points from No. 3 after shooting a 48. 

Dylan Archer’s 44 gave the Green Wave four points in No. 4, while Kris Bostrom and Jacob Frank didn’t face opponents in No. 5 and No. 6, with Bostrom shooting a 57 and Frank shooting a 37 in six holes of action. 

Frontier 15, Chicopee 9 — Mike Corduff earned match-medalist with a 38 from the No. 1 spot as the Red Hawks came away with a tight victory in an independent match at the Chicopee Country Club. 

Gunnar Moore earned Frontier four points from No. 2 with a 40 and Rowan Blair’s 47 from No. 4 also earned the Red Hawks four points. 

Porter Clancy came away with 2.5 points in the No. 3 match after shooting a 47.
