Athol author J.R. Greene has issued the 35th annual edition of his Quabbin History Calendar for 2020, featuring black-and-white and sepia photos of places destroyed to build the Quabbin Reservoir.
Included are views of a school, church, ice house, stores, a summer camp from the old Swift River Valley, and a mill from the Oakham village of Coldbrook Springs. There are also two photos related to the Athol branch of the Boston and Albany railroad that ran through the valley. Greene said he dedicated the calendar to “the memory of the people who once lived in those places.”
As has been done every fifth year, Greene said the calendar is printed on coated paper stock to enhance the quality of the pictures.
The retail price of the calendar is $14.95 per copy. The calendar is on sale at Federal Street Books and World Eye Bookshop in Greenfield, at Haley’s Antiques and Larry’s Variety in Athol, and at the New Salem General Store. It can also be ordered directly from Greene; his email is jrg01331@webtv.net.
