Dabney Rollins scored 14 points and Taylor Greene added 11 points, but visiting Turners Falls dropped a 54-38 decision to Hopkins Academy in an independent girls basketball contest played Monday night in Hadley.
It was a banner night for the Golden Hawks (3-0), which celebrated its WMass Division 4 championship prior to tip-off. Allison Kowal-Safron scored 16 points to pace the defending champs, while Gabby Palmisano joined her in double figures with 12 points.
Kendra Campbell chipped in six points for Turners (0-2), while Morgan Dobias added four points.
Weather permitting, the Thunder are scheduled to play again tonight at home against Lee.
Athol Middle School sweeps
Trailing 20-19 at halftime, the Athol Middle School boys basketball team put it all together in the second half on Monday.
Angel Castillo and Tony Carbone scored 12 points apiece, lifting AMS to a 50-35 win over Great Falls in a game played in Turners Falls.
Logan Cormier had 10 points for Athol, which also received offensive contributions from Colby Goodwin (6 points), Caleb Leblanc (4), Jamieson Vincent (2), Ethan Bacigalupo (2) and Landon Mallette (2).
■ In the girls game, AMS opened its season with a 38-8 win over Great Falls on Monday.
Aby Lutz led a balanced scoring attach with 8 points, as Athol used a 19-0 run in the first half to create some separation. Jenna Bonenfant added 7 points, while Sammy Mailloux and Anna Duquette followed with 6 points apiece and Olivia Horrigan added 5.
Great Falls was paced offensively by Cordelia Guerin’s 4 points.
Sawmill 10K
Registration for the annual Sawmill River 10K is ongoing. The race is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 1 in Montague Center beginning at 10 a.m. near the Village Common on Main Street.
Race day registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Montague Common Hall and online registration is available at RunReg.com or www.montague.net. Divisions of the race include Youth (17 and under), Open (18-39), Master (40-49), Senior (50-59) and Senior+ (60 and up). Entry fee is $30 by Dec. 30 and $35 anytime after.

Berkshire Highlands
Registration for the Berkshire Highlands Pentathlon is underway.
The annual run, ride and paddle event (a 4.2-mile road/trail run, a 16-mile cycling leg, 2-mile kayak, a 2-mile adventure run, a mile hike to the top of the mountain and a downhill ski to the finish) at Berkshire East Mountain Resort is set for April 4. Registration is open with newly-reduced entry fees.
