The Franklin Tech wrestling team placed 11th at the Dan Gionet Memorial Tournmanent on Saturday in Pelham, N.H.

The Eagles finished with 50 points as a team. Tyngsboro placed first overall out of 15 teams with 172½ points.

Josh Brunelle battled his way  to the finals of the 132-pound bracket, but lost a 5-2 decision to Troy Forgitano of Georgetown-Ipswich.

Kyle Brunelle made it to the finals in the 138-pound bracket but took a loss to Josh Ducharme of Tyngsgboro.

College hockey

UMass sweeps Vermont

The UMass hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Vermont with a 3-1 victory Saturday in Burlington. John Leonard, Jake McLaughlin and Matthew Kessel all scored for the Minutemen (16-7-1, 9-4-1 Hockey East).

Kessel’s power-play goal 17:22 into the third period was the insurance goal after the Catamounts cut the lead to 2-1 about eight minutes earlier.

Leonard opened the scoring on a breakaway for his team-leading 17th goal of the season less than two minutes into the game.

McLaughlin made it a 2-0 game about 13 minutes into the opening frame, and goalie Filip Lindberg kept it that way by stopping a penalty shot.

UMass hosts New Hampshire on Friday at the Mullins Center.

Basketball

Middle School

The Mahar Regional boys team beat Greenfield, 52-30 on Friday.

Lucas Isrow led the Senators with 12 points.

Owen Carl (10 points) and Will Barnes (10 points) also reached double figures.

■The Athol boys team beat Hopkins Academy, 49-35, on Saturday in Hadley.

 Ben Kearney and Logan Cormier scored nine points with Ethan Bacigalupo, Angel Castillo, and Colby Goodwin each chipping in with eight.

Suburban

Jonathan Breor scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Sunday as the Greenfield 7th-8th grade Suburban team traveled to Ware and won 57-43.

Caleb Murray added 12 points, and Hugh Cyhowski had 12. Jacob Blanchard and Nico Fassulo chipped in with nine and seven points, respectively.

On Saturday, Jerry Ven and Jackson Campbell had seven points apiece in a 44-32 home loss to East Longmeadow. Blanchard (six) and Murray (five) also had solid efforts.

Prep Schools

The Deerfield Academy girls basketball team defeated Exeter, 64-34 on Saturday.

Deerfield girls hockey beat Exeter on the road, 3-0.

The Deerfield boys hockey team battled to a draw, 7-7, to Trinity-Pawling in overtime at home. 

The Deerfield boys basketball team lost on the road to Salisbury, 66-28.

The Deerfield boys squash team beat Choate (7-0) and Trinity (7-0) at the Choate Tournament.

The Deerfield wrestling team beat Hyde (36-24) while losing to Exeter (24-6) and Andover (60-12) at the Exeter Tournament.

The Deerfield boys swimming team lost to Exeter, 105-75 while the girls also lost to Exeter, 92-88.

Running

Sleigh Bell Run

As part of the 2020 Greenfield Winter Carnival, the Greenfield Recreation Department will host the Sleigh Bell Run at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 1. The  four-mile run will start on Hope Street and run through the Highland Park area. 

Pre-register on RunReg or on race day at Hope & Olive Restaurant from 8:45-9:30 a.m. Pre-race entry is $25 if registered by Friday, January 17 and $30 after that date and on race day. Youth under age 18 are half price. 

Volunteers are still needed for the event. Volunteers and the first 50 runners will receive a free 2020 Winter Carnival T-shirt. There will also be free refreshments following the race.
