Hugh Cyhowski shut the door in relief, and visiting Greenfield Gilmore & Farrell Insurance took the lead for good in the fifth inning en route to a 7-2 win over Frontier in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Sandy Koufax contest Monday night at Herlihy Park in Whately.
Locked in a 1-1 game in the fifth, Greenfield struck for two runs. Braeden Tsipenyuk walked, stole second and third and second on an error. Later in the inning, Jackson Campbell singled home Cyhowski to make it 3-1.
Greenfield scored two more in the sixth and two more in the seventh to seal the deal, and Cyhowski got the win after tossing four innings of relief with four strikeouts. Jake Petrin started and struck out five in three innings of work.
Frontier’s Grayson Loos drove in both runs, including an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning that tied the game.
Tsipenyuk reached base three times for Greenfield and stole four bases, while Campbell, Bryce Avery, Ethan Quinn and Devin Dubie all registered RBI singles. Cyhowski drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Frontier’s Davey Mazur launched a deep triple in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored on a Loos RBI single. Gabe Solodky added a hit while Dylan Camp pitched well in relief, keeping Greenfield in check over three innings of work.
Frontier visits Amherst Wednesday at Ziomek Field while Greenfield returns home to play Amherst at Beacon Field on Friday night.
Greenfield is now 5-0 and atop the Sandy Koufax Division, while Amherst is second at 4-1. Frontier fell to 1-3 with the defeat.
West County blanks Hatfield
Shawn Davenport dazzled to the tune of five no-hit innings and five strikeouts, and the visiting Hilltown Hardwood Flooring West County Warriors cruised to a 10-0 victory over Hatfield in a PVYBL Mickey Mantle game Monday.
West County scored twice in the first and five times in the second to open up a quick 7-0 lead it would not relinquish.
Davenport also did the job at the plate, smacking three hits, including a double. Reuben Bassett and Tyler Dubreuil had two hits apiece, with Bassett smacking a double, while Liam O’Donnell, Jesse Dubreuil, Cullen Brown, Matt Pollen, Rosco Palmer, Jaden Moore and Cole Johnson all tossed in base hits.
The Warriors improved to 4-2 on the season, and return to action Saturday morning with a home game against Northampton at 10 a.m.
Valley Storm tryouts
The Valley Storm softball club will be holding tryouts for the 2020/2021 season in August.
Team eligibility is based on a player’s age as of Dec. 31, 2020. All tryouts will be held at Murphy Park in Greenfield.
12U tryout dates: Aug. 11, 13, 18 and 20 – 6-8 p.m.
14U tryout dates: Aug. 11, 13, 18 and 20 – 6-8 p.m.
16U tryout dates: Aug. 2 from 5-7 p.m. and Aug. 5 from 6-8 p.m.
18U tryout dates: Aug. 4 from 5:30-7 p.m. and Aug. 6 from 5:30-7 p.m.

91st New England Amateur
South Deerfield’s Jonathan Elkins carded a 2-over-par round of 72 to lead the local contingent during Round 1 of the 91st New England Amateur Championship at Concord Country Club on Tuesday.
Elkins recorded four birdies on his day. He was 2-over at the turn but shot an even-par 35 on the back nine. As of press time, he was in a tie for 33rd place.
Tatnuck CC’s Timothy Umphrey was the clubhouse leader with a 4-under 66.
South Deerfield’s Jacob Zaranek shot 7-over 77 in his opening round. After notching a birdie on his very first hole of the day, Zaranek had six bogeys and a double-bogey on his card the rest of the afternoon. Zaranek was in a tie for 106th at press time.
Round 2 is set for Wednesday, and the field will be cut down before Thursday’s final day where golfers will play 36 holes.
CCG 18-Hole Women’s
Irene McDonald and Dianne Wood teamed for a 13-under 59 to take first place as the Country Club of Greenfield 18-Hole Women’s League held a Blind Draw Partners event on Tuesday.
Donna Woodcock and Barb Killeen were second at 12-under 60, followed in third place by the teams of Anne Echeverria/Lane Kelly, Sue McDonald/Anne Corrinet and Tina Browne/Maureen Barclay — all at 11-under 61.
CCG Women’s 9-Hole
Chris Eugin and Liz Dolby led the way with identical scores of 22 as the Country Club of Greenfield 9-Hole Women’s League played an even holes game on Monday.
Eugin and Dolby were tops in the Patty Berg Flight.
In the Nancy Lopez Flight, Ann McHugh carded a score of 23, followed by Lora Gross and Donna Woodcock at 25 apiece. Lisa Sullivan won the Lorena Ochoa Flight with a 24, just ahead of Ellen Bitzer’s 25.
Janet Andrews had the low score in the Juli Inkster Flight (26), followed by Karen Duclos with a 27. Four golfers — Elaine Mount, Kim French, Sue Luippold and Maureen Barclay — shot 29 to take first in the JoAnne Carner Flight. Brenda Dedinas won the Annika Sorenstam Flight with a 32, followed by Emily Simmons’ 34.
