Tim Prevost sealed the deal on the tennis court with a victory on Sunday evening, capturing the men’s title in the Beacon Classic sponsored by West County Cider in Greenfield.

Prevost scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over Petru Cojocaru to capture the championship.

In the inaugural women’s division contested Saturday afternoon, Suzanne Bauer was the victor with a win over Eugenia Cojocaru.

Frontier Koufax comes from behind

Trailing 7-3 in the fourth inning, Frontier scored nine unanswered runs to close out the game, ultimately scoring a 12-7 win over Brattleboro in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Sandy Koufax game on Monday night.

Frontier scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the fifth to turn a deficit into a victory.

Kyle Begos, Gabe Solodky and Sam Whitney all had two hits for Frontier, and Begos and Whitney each drove in two runs. Davey Mazur and Thomas Unkles each smacked a hit and drove in two runs in the victory, while Brayden McDonough, Owen Babb, Hugh Hart, Dylan Camp and Grayson Loos all added a hit.

Camp took the win in relief, and Babb tossed the final three innings to nail down the save.

FC Babe Ruth clinics

The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League, in its 51st year, will continue a series of Saturday practice clinics at the Babe Ruth complex at Abercrombie Field in East Greenfield. Coaches from the league as well as from local schools are expected to run the sessions, targeted toward players ages 12 to 15. Emphasis will be on infield and outfield play, as well as hitting mechanics.

Steve Wall, instructor for the Hampshire/Franklin Baseball Umpires Association, will lead a question and answer session on the new National Federation High School playing rules for both players and coaches on the program’s final Saturday.

The practice clinics, which began last weekend, will take place the next three Saturdays (Aug. 1, 8, 15) from 10 a.m. and noon. All state and local Health Dept. safety guidelines will be strictly followed.

Four Rivers Charter Public School is actively seeking a girls’ varsity soccer coach for the upcoming fall season. The school is looking for a qualified candidate who knows and understands soccer, has a positive attitude, loves to coach and loves working with teenagers.
