The offense continued to roll for the Greenfield field hockey team on Friday.
Lillia Kachelmeyer recorded a hat trick, and the host Green Wave moved to 2-0 on the young season on the strength of a 7-0 victory over Mohawk Trail.
“I thought we played a strong offensive game today,” lauded Greenfield head coach Erin Thayer. “We had lots of great passing lanes, passed the ball ahead well and our communication was good.”
Kaylah Eggsware found the back of the net twice for Greenfield, while Maddy Kuchieski and Katie Haselton also tallied. Kachelmeyer and Eggsware notched assists in the win.
Mohawk Trail goalkeeper Kordaryl Kendall played well, recording a whopping 32 saves in a busy outing between the pipes.
“He played a strong game and made a lot of good saves,” Thayer said of Kendall.
Frontier 3, Mahar 1 – Locked in a back-and-forth affair on the turf in Orange, Emily DeMaio took it upon herself to send visiting Frontier into the winner’s circle.
The hero of last year’s WMass Div. 2 title game scored all three of her team’s goals on Friday, helping the Red Hawks bounce back from last week’s loss to Turners Falls with a 3-1 victory over Mahar.
“I thought we played really well but they managed to keep getting breakaways and Emily was on fire,” Mahar coach Laurie Saisa offered. “Either controlling the ball or jumping on rebounds, she was everywhere.”
After DeMaio made it 1-0 early in the first quarter, Mahar tied the game when Caroline Chase swept in a goal with an assist from Gracie Marsh.
DeMaio tallied again to help Frontier take a 2-1 lead into halftime, and she finished off the hat trick with an insurance marker five minutes into the third quarter.
Isabella Bisceglia made 12 saves in net for Mahar, while Frontier keeper Ella Flanders recorded five saves.
Turners Falls 6, Pioneer 1 – Brynn Tela propelled host Turners Falls to another impressive victory on Friday.
The senior sniper scored twice in the first half and added a second-half tally to finish off the hat trick, helping the Thunder register a 6-1 victory over Pioneer.
Logan Addison, Brooke Thayer and Paige Sulda all had a goal in the win for undefeated Turners (3-0), which led 3-0 at halftime. Olivia Whitter, Kaylin Voudren and Tela chipped in with assists.
“I think they’ve adapted well so far,” Turners Falls coach Becky Zukowski said of her team. “They’re happy to be playing and they’ve come out and played really hard. The seniors are making the most of their last year.”
Pioneer’s Sofia Walker got the visitors on the board in the second half with a goal, and keeper Charlotte Kahler recorded 13 saves in net. Turners’ Haleigh Greene finished with one save.
Athol 4, FC Tech 1 – Two goals from Kassidy Swan secured Athol’s first win of the season, as the Red Raiders held serve at home with a 4-1 victory over Franklin Tech on Friday.
The junior also picked up an assist, feeding Sadey Lehtomaki for a goal to aid the Athol offensive effort. Abigail Kirwin also scored in the victory.
Franklin Tech’s Keira Stevens netted the lone goal for the visitors, as she converted a penalty stroke in the first half.
Athol’s Sam Kenniff made three saves in net, while Tech goalie Kyleigh Baleno stopped 18 shots.
Pioneer 200, Mohawk Trail 211 – Jalen McGraw was the clear match medalist, as the Pioneer golfer shot 43 to help his team capture a victory over Mohawk Trail in action played Friday at Edge Hill Golf Course in Ashfield.
Jared Hubbard carded a round of 50 for the Panthers, while teammates Sean Allen (52) and Sam Glazier (56) also figured into the scoring as both squads took their four lowest scorers toward the team total.
Consistency was the name of the game for the Warriors, as their top four golfers all finished within one stroke of each other. Douglas Wilcox had his side’s low round of the day, a 52, while Ben Thompson, Logan Moore and Phineas Tuttman all shot 53.
