Delaney Parker scored 16 points and dished out 12 assists and Kendrah Doane had six points and 11 rebounds to propel the Mahar girls basketball team past Mohawk Trail, 63-48, on Thursday in Buckland.
Micalyn Mailloux had a strong game on the offensive end for the Senators, scoring a game-high 17 points in the win. Abby Henne had seven points and Saylor Kegans added four points.
Mya Lesieur scored 16 points for Mohawk Trail, knocking down four 3-pointers. Hannah Gilbert had 12 points and Makayla Tatro and Grace Ward each had six points in the loss.
Frontier 36, Turners Falls 19 — Despite starting its season a week later than most, the Frontier girls basketball team has hit the ground running.
After beating Hopkins on Tuesday, the Red Hawks followed it up with a 36-19 victory over Turners Falls on Thursday at Goodnow Gymnasium.
“Our team played really well,” Frontier senior Rebecca Bridwell said. “We kind of got rolling in the second quarter and we got a good lead.”
Both teams started out slow on the offensive end, with the first quarter coming to a close with the Hawks up 4-0. Frontier exploded in the second quarter for 18 points to take a 22-4 lead into the half.
“The first game, everyone is recognizing and getting the new stuff,” Bridwell said. “This game, we got a lot more used to it as the game went and are growing as team.”
Kaitlyn Mackin finished with 10 points in the win, with Kylie Laford adding nine points. Sierra Warren had eight points and Charlotte Doulette tossed in four points.
Dylan Burnett and Steph Peterson each had four points for the Thunder, and Madi Liimatainen finished with three points.
FC Tech 32, Pioneer 26 — The Eagles found their way into the win column for the first time this season, as Kendra Campbell’s 11 points and five rebounds propelled them past the Panthers, 32-26, in Northfield on Thursday.
“Both teams played hard,” Franklin Tech coach Joe Gamache said. “It feels good to get a win.”
Freshman Kaitlin Trudeau finished with nine points in the win, with Gemanaia Cruz scoring seven points and snagging five rebounds. Emily Ryan had three points and eight boards.
Sofia Walker paced Pioneer with eight points. Laura Kahler and Charlotte Kahler each dropped in six points apiece in the loss.
Hopkins 33, Athol 16 — Sara Beauchamp dropped in a game-high 12 points to lead the Golden Hawks to a 33-16 victory on Thursday in Hadley.
Emma Bacigalupo finished with five points for Athol, with Christa Cucchi and Rozlyn Nelson each scoring four points and Reily Polana adding three points.
“I’m proud of the girls,” Athol coach Kelly Kaczmarczyk said. “They listened to all the little things we’re working on in practice and I’m proud they showed them on the court.”
■ On Tuesday, the Athol JV team came away with an 18-10 victory over Greenfield behind Jenna Bonenfant’s eight points.
Frontier 84, Turners 51 — It took the Red Hawk offense one game to wake up.
After a slow start offensively on Tuesday in its first game of the season, Frontier came out on fire from the 3-point line Thursday against the Thunder, resulting in an 84-51 victory.
It was a balanced scoring effort from the Red Hawks, with Adan Hernandez leading the charge with 16 points. Sean Richter scored 11 points while Ethan Machon, Sam Schreiber, Dylan Martin and Joe Thomson each recorded eight points.
Marcus Sanders had a game-high 22 points for Turners, with Brendan Driscoll had 13 points.
It was a big second quarter that put the game away for Frontier, as it outscored the Thunder 28-10 in those eight minutes.
Mahar 57, Mohawk Trail 35 — One day after winning just before the final buzzer, the Mahar boys basketball team made sure late-game dramatics weren’t required on Thursday.
The Senators jumped out to a 30-15 halftime lead and managed to keep Mohawk Trail at arms’ length en route to a 57-35 win in Orange.
“We were a little sluggish coming out but we settled in nicely,” said Mahar coach Chad Softic. “It was great to see everyone contributing.”
The Senators indeed had a balanced outing offensively, with seven players scoring at least five points. Jake Tenney (eight points, nine assists, seven rebounds), Jake Carron (eight points, six rebounds) and Connor Sluder (eight points, eight rebounds) all led the charge, as did Wednesday night’s hero Matt Lyesiuk, who scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds. Noaha Chabot recorded 12 rebounds to go with three points, and Hunter Martin tossed in seven points.
Mohawk Trail was powered by Austin Sumner’s game-high 13 points. Teammate Tyler Dubreuil went for 10 points, nine rebounds and seven steals, while Shawn Davenport added six points.
“The positive is that the effort is definitely there,” Mohawk Trail coach Darren Schmidt said. “Guys are working hard. I think with that, hopefully we can build on the positive aspects.”
Pioneer 65, FC Tech 27 — A defensive barrage in the second quarter turned the tides in the Powertown Thursday night.
Visiting Pioneer trailed 12-11 after one quarter, but using a defensive blitz, the Panthers outscored Franklin Tech by a 25-2 margin in the period and ultimately pulled away for a 65-27 victory.
“Pioneer’s a very good, very athletic team,” Franklin Tech coach Tim Artus said. “They turned on their defense in the second quarter and pressured us a lot. They turned us over and that led to a very big number.”
Jalen McGraw led 11 Pioneer scorers with 14 points, followed by Liam Bradley-Curtis and Sean Allen with nine points apiece. Troy Emond had seven points, Ryan Potter had six and Brayden Thayer tossed in five points.
Dylan Demers was the high scorer for Franklin Tech with 13 points. Ty Sadoski added seven points.
Hopkins 68, Athol 40 — Andrew Ciaglo scored 11 of his 21 points in the third quarter, as visiting Hopkins Academy outscored Athol 37-14 after intermission to pick up a 68-40 victory Thursday night at Mallet Gymnasium.
The game was tied at 13 following the opening quarter, and the Golden Hawks led just 31-26 at halftime before creating some separation after the break.
“We played well for two and a half quarters,” explained Athol coach Dan Bevis. “We were right there. Ciaglo had a good third quarter, and they put some distance between us when he got hot.”
Noah Pottinger scored in double figures for Athol with 10 points. Vinnie Gordon followed with eight points and Beau Manning tossed in seven points.
■ Colby Goodwin finished with 11 points, Conal Tontodonato scored nine points and Angel Castillo had eight points to lead the Athol JV team to a 39-38 win over Hopkins on Thursday.
