WARWICK — Just 42 ballots were cast in the annual town election on Monday, which saw Alan Genovese take the open three-year Selectboard seat on a write-in campaign.
About 6.75 percent of the town’s 622 registered voters cast their ballots, with Town Clerk John Paganetti saying 36 residents filled out their ballots in person at Town Hall on Monday, while six voted early or by mail.
The moderator position was the only one that was not filled. According to Treasurer Beth Gilgun, there were multiple write-in candidates, all of whom did not accept the position. A moderator can be appointed by the Selectboard.
Genovese, speaking Tuesday morning, thanked everyone who “took the time to go to the polls and vote, regardless of how they cast their ballot,” as well as those who supported his write-in candidacy.
“I will do my best to serve the best interest of the town and look forward to working with board members Todd Dexter and Brian Snell,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for both of them and believe collectively we will put forth a balanced perspective.”
Genovese said “exploring what is the best approach in providing educational opportunities” for Warwick students is one of several current topics the town is focused on. He said he is “fortunate to have served” on the HEART (Honest Education and Retaining Trust) Committee, and now as a member of the Six Town Regionalization Planning Board, the Pioneer Valley Regional School District School Committee and the Warwick Pro Tempore School Governance Committee. He noted he may have to step down from the latter board and serve in a different capacity following his Selectboard election.
“It will take some time for me to get caught up on all the challenges and exciting initiatives happening in town,” Genovese said, “and I am fortunate to be working with many dedicated people so our collective work should be more manageable.”
