In its third match of the season against St. Mary’s, the Greenfield boys tennis team came away with a 4-0 sweep over the Saints in Westfield on Thursday.
With both teams short on players, the No. 2 doubles match was a double forfeit, with neither team picking up a point.
“We’ve seen them a lot,” Green Wave coach Andrew Varnon said, “and we just happened to pull out a win each time which is nice for us.”
The win keeps Greenfield an unblemished 4-0 in Tri-County North matches this season.
Petru Cojocaru earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over John Baillargon in No. 1 singles while Daniel Pena-Chadee defeated Matt Sabat, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.
The best match of the day came at No. 3 singles, where Greenfield’s Jacob Frank had a lot of close rallies against Ben Howes. Ultimately it was Frank who battled it out with a 6-3, 6-4 win. At No. 1 doubles, Matt Lavoine and Christian Larouche rolled past St Mary’s Ryan Sweeney and Evan Durkee, picking up a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Four Rivers 15, Northampton 7 — Down three starters, multiple Otter players stepped up to earn a 15-7 triumph over the Blue Devils on Thursday.
“I was pleased that a couple of our non-starters stepped up for us,” Four Rivers coach Terry Plotkin said.
Aidan DeLorenzo tossed four assists and caught three goals in the win, and Avani Richardson used his speed to score seven goals.
Amherst 14, Frontier 12 — The Redhawks came to play, putting forth their best effort of the season in a 14-12 loss to the Hurricanes on Thursday.
Brady Burch had a strong game as a handler, with Payton Sladeski and Will Reading playing well on defense for Frontier. Andre Widmer made a few nice catches while David Frazier, Ben Caron and Max Rajballie all scored in the loss.
