Pioneer students Sam Glazier and Jared Hubbard have proven themselves skilled bass fishermen.
The two earned qualifying spots to the 2021 Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School National Championship after finishing first in the Massachusetts High School Open.
Glazier and Hubbard — who fish for Mass Nation High School Club — finished with 298 out of a possible 300 points, taking third in the first event of the Open before winning the second and third events.
The championship will take place from July 29-31 at Chickamauga Lake in Dayton, Tennessee.

Desmond Drake had two hits, Evan Tsipenyuk doubled and Chase Zraunig and Wayde Bardwell singled to lead Gilmore and Farrell to an 8-5 win over Maniatty’s in the Greenfield Minor League Baseball Majors championship game on Wednesday.
Zraunig and Juleyen Laughren-Carter combined to pitch three scoreless innings to close out the game for Gilmore and Farrell and seal the championship victory.
Cooper Whitney and Michael Cyhowski each had two hits and Arthur Fitzpatrick hit safely for Maniatty’s. Whitney pitched well for the final three innings.
Post 81 Juniors rout Longmeadow
Hugh Cyhowski struck out three in four innings on the mound, and Jason Quinn powered the offense with a home run, a double and six RBIs as Greenfield Post 81 blew past Longmeadow, 22-2, in a five-inning Junior Legion contest Tuesday night at Vets Field.
Ethan Quinn smacked three hits and drove in three runs for Post 81 (2-0), while Braeden Tsipenyuk was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Other offensive contributors were David Carey (triple, RBI) and Jackson Petrin (hit, three RBIs).
Tyler Podolski struck out two in an inning of work on the bump.
Greenfield returns to action Thursday against Sheffield.
Sandy Koufax
The Greenfield Sandy Koufax team picked up a pair of wins over the weekend, starting with a 12-4 victory over Mohawk.
Tyler Yetter had three hits including a double in the win, with Luca Siano and Chris Markowski pitching well.
Logan Moore had a strong game on the mound and added a hit for Mohawk.
Greenfield then earned a 5-3 win over Brattleboro, with Yetter hitting safely twice and Siano knocking a single and three RBIs.
Jackson Campbell got the win on the mound and tallied two hits and Hugh Cyhowski came in to pick up the save.
Pioneer Valley Women’s
Meg Burrington had four hits and six RBIs, Samantha Davis had three hits and an RBI and Sarah Crowell had three hits and a pair of RBIs as Ashfield beat Conway, 19-5, on Tuesday in a Pioneer Valley Women’s Softball League game.
Cami MacDonald and Sam Torres each had two hits and an RBI in the loss.
FC Tech Summer League
The Franklin County Tech Varsity Girls Summer Basketball League got underway on Monday, with Greenfield picking up a 40-25 win over Franklin Tech in the first game of the night.
Greenfield’s Amber Bergeron led all scorers with 22 points, with Lillia Kachelmeyer adding six points, Josie Cloutier scoring five points, Tess Rancourt scoring four points and Anna Bucala adding three points in the win.
Kendra Campbell led Tech with 11 points. Hannah Gilbert chipped in six points, Lea Chapman had four points and Keira Stevens and Umi Burnes each had two points.
In the second game of the night, Frontier came away with a 28-27 win over Turners Falls behind six points apiece from Kylie Laford, Katie Wells-Robinson and Haley Hutkowski.
Molly Gates and Kali Berthiaume each had four points and Madison McKimmie had two points in the win.
Taylor Greene and Abi Holloway each had eight points for Turners, with Steph Peterson dropping seven points and Tatiana Carr-Williams and Kendrah Doane each recording two points in the loss.
PVSSL
Huzaifa Kiani scored a hat trick to lead Frontier to a 6-0 win over Northampton in a Pioneer Valley Summer Soccer League game on Monday in Whatley.
Brady Burch scored a goal and tacked on two assists for Frontier, with Payton Sladeski scoring a goal and an assist, Matthew Sicard scoring a goal and Ngwang Deter and Aidan Valderrama both providing assists. Tavo Vincent made four saves in the win.
CCG Women’s League
In a par 3’s and 4’s only contest, Chris Eugin took first in the Patty Berg Flight with a score of 35 in the 9 Hole Women’s League at the Country Club of Greenfield on Monday.
Liz Dolby took second with a 36.
TC Emerson won the Nancy Lopez Flight with a 36, followed by Lora Gross with a 42. In the Lorena Ochoa Flight, Lisa Sullivan, Angela Berquist, Linda Lively and Anne Lyman tied for first with each finishing with a score of 43.
Maureen Barclay won the JoAnne Carner Flight with a 47, followed by Wanda Pyfrom and Elaine Mount with 49’s.
The Franklin County Hoop Clinic is returning this summer, running from July 19-23 at Greenfield High School.
The clinic is open for boys and girls ages 6-14, running from 8:45 a.m.-2 p.m. The cost is $150 per participant and will be run by Greenfield High School girls basketball coach John Hickey and Green Wave boys coach Angelo Thomas, who together have over 40 years of coaching experience.
This is the 24th year the clinic is taking place, with the main purpose to provide each player the tools necessary to elevate their game as well as learning the concept of hard work, dedication and what it takes to be successful both on the court and in life.
