ORANGE — Demolition of the Route 2 bridge over Route 202 is on schedule, with the remaining debris having been removed this week, according to the state Department of Transportation (MassDOT).
In addition to the bridge replacement, the scope of work includes adding acceleration and deceleration lanes for the interchange ramp system and adding pedestrian and bicycle accommodations within the project limits on Route 202. The anticipated completion is the fall or winter of 2023.
MassDOT had announced on Dec. 3 that it would conduct bridge demolition work, requiring overnight and daytime closures of lanes on Route 202 for a couple of weeks beginning on Dec. 5. The bridge had been previously deemed structurally deficient.
The first phase of overnight demolition operations began in early December 2020.
Orange awarded the project to E.T.& L. Corp., of Stow, for $15.1 million — the lowest of three bids received. According to MassDOT, the contract cost with contingencies is estimated at $17.4 million, and estimated construction costs — including design services — are estimated to be $18.2 million. Eighty percent of the project is to be paid for with federal money, while state funding finances the rest.
