Saturday: Cutthroat Brook Tree Farm Family Day

Join Mount Grace for a family-friendly hike at Cutthroat Brook Tree Farm in Athol, Saturday, March 26, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Come explore the brook at its most exciting time of the year on a hike guided by landowner and former teacher Susie Feldman and Youth Education Coordinator Amanda Carotenuto. The hike is recommended for students second grade and up.

This event is free and open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The hike is 1.5 miles across even terrain with one stream crossing. Registration is required at: bit.ly/3wpY3np. Rain date: Saturday, April 2, 1 to 3 p.m.

Saturday: Explore the Road to Dana Common

PETERSHAM — Along the old road to Dana Common are foundations, walls and trees that tell the story of the towns now long gone. Join us on this 1.8 mile (3.6 round trip) hike to Dana Common and discover what life was like in the Quabbin Valley. Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring water and a snack. Saturday: Monadnock / Tristate Dance Club

April 2: Honoring Spelman College founders

ATHOL — On Saturday, April 2, a ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Silver Lake Pavilion to honor two area women who founded what is now known as Spelman College, the oldest all-women’s historically Black college or university in the country, Sophia Packard and Harriet Giles were both born in New Salem.

April 14: ‘Quabbin houses’ at The Gardner Museum

GARDNER — Local nature photographer and avid historian Dale Monette will once again present a fascinating topic at The Gardner Museum, this time of the Quabbin Reservoir history. Thursday, April 14, from 7 to 8 p.m., after a museum-hosted reception from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Monette will share images of buildings before and after the creation of the reservoir in the 1930s. Since the early 1970s, Dale lived within 2 miles of the Quabbin reservoir; after receiving a BS degree from UMass’ Dept. of Environmental Conservation in Natural Resources Conservation, he spent his career working at Quabbin as an educator and naturalist. April 23: Green Clean Athol

ATHOL — The Green Clean Athol Spring Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday, April 23. “We’re urging people to do their neighborhood. People are encouraged to show up at Lord Pond Plaza the morning of the event. Heidi Strickland said, “This year we’re going to have a map, and if people need a place to go, we will designate a place and hand them a map.”

April 22-24: Fly-fishing show

MARLBOROUGH — Columnist Mike Roche tells us, “The Fly-Fishing Show, which boomed when that sport had a growth spurt, has just announced a change in dates and will be held at the Marlborough Royal Plaza Hotel and Trade Center April 22-24. Local fly fishermen have always enjoyed this show, produced by a group that holds similar events across the country, as the latest equipment and many exciting destinations are always part of the lure as are the many interesting seminars.”
