Two different Franklin Tech boys track athletes qualified for the PVIAC Championships on Thursday in a meet against Athol.
Brayden McCord won the triple jump (36 feet, 0.75 inches) and 100-meter dash (12 seconds) while Josiah Little took the long jump (18-7). Both marks qualified them for the postseason meet on May 21, and lifted the Eagles to a 107-33 Intercounty League victory in Turners Falls.
They’ll join Cameren Candelaria, who previously qualified in the 100.
Grayson Bowse won the high jump (4-10), Owen LaValley took the pole vault (8-0), David Stowe took first in the 100 hurdles (20.9) and 400 hurdles (1:09.5), Anthony Gallo won the mile (5:57.9) and 2 mile (18:27), Colby Leete took the 400 (73.1) and Candelaria won the 200 (27.0) for Franklin Tech. The Eagles won the 4×100 (49.6) and 4×400 (5:47) relays.
Joe Gray won the shot put (36-7) and javelin (131-8), Joe Grant won the discus (96-3) and Mathew Pilling won the 800 (3:05) for the Bears.
Turners 84, Athol 14 — The Thunder picked up their first win of the season on Thursday, as Hannah Morrissey won the mile (8:04) and 2 mile (18:34) while Linley Rollins took the 100 hurdles (27.8) and javelin (61-3) and Charlotte Canterbury won the 800 (3:48) and long jump (11-1) in the victory.
Other Thunder winners were Jaade Duncan in the 100 (13.7), Elise Wolfe in the 400 (1:42), Ella Guidaboni in the 400 hurdles (1:33), Jazzlyn Gonzalez in the 200 (29.3), Madeline Randall in the high jump (4-0), MeKenzie Sourtiff in the pole vault (6-0) and Madeline Brandl in the triple jump (22-9). Turners won the 4×100 relay (1:02).
Sydney Gauvin won the shot put (23-7) and discus (81-3) for Athol.
Mahar 10, Mohawk Trail 8 — The Warriors led 7-4 after two innings but the Senators outscored them 6-1 the rest of the way to come out with a Bi-County North win in Buckland on Thursday.
Liam O’Donnell cracked a double and a triple at the plate for Mahar (2-7, 2-4), with David Vitello tallying three hits, Cole Johnson knocking two hits, Jayden Delgado finishing with a double and Sam Connor and Will Barnes hitting safely in the win.
Deven Buchanon tallied a double and two singles for Mohawk Trail. Logan Moore had a single and a double, Ty Griswold hit a double while Phineas Tuttman, Weston Den Ouden and Oliver Johnson hit safely in the loss.
Greenfield 2, Athol 1 — It was another low-scoring Suburban League West affair between Greenfield and Athol on Thursday, with the Green Wave surrendering just one run to come away with a 2-1 triumph in Athol.
TJ Thibeault struck out 11, walked just one and scattered three hits for Greenfield (9-4, 4-3). David Carey hit a double and scored on a balk, Deven Dubie had a pair of hits and Thibeault and Trevor Kuchieski hit safely for the Green Wave.
Dilan Fountain struck out nine and had two base hits for Athol (2-10, 0-6). Caleb Cox also had a hit in the loss.
Frontier 8, Easthampton 7 — Trailing 5-1 after three innings, the Redhawks rallied to score four in the fourth and ultimately pulled out an 8-7 Suburban League West win in Easthampton on Thursday.
The host Eagles led 6-5 going into the fifth before Frontier pushed a pair across in the top of the inning and didn’t relinquish the advantage.
Liam Skribiski-Banack nearly went the distance, striking out six in six and two-third innings work. Tyler Cusson came on to get a strikeout with the bases loaded to seal the win.
Kevin Baumann cracked three hits and brought in a pair of runs for Frontier (10-3, 7-0). Tyler Baranowski had a pair of hits and RBIs, Skribiski-Banack had a pair of hits and an RBI, Tyler Dubreuil and Iain Spearance each tallied two hits, and Aidan Drury had a hit and an RBI in the win.
• Max Skribiski-Banack had a hit and two RBIs to lead the Frontier JV team to a 6-3 win over Easthampton.
Athol 7, Smith Academy 0 — Sadey Lehtomaki smacked a triple, a home run — giving her 100 career hits — and brought in a pair of runs to lead the Bears to a Franklin County League East win over the Falcons in Hatfield on Thursday.
Lindsey LeBlanc went the distance in the circle for Athol (8-5, 4-2), striking out 14 and surrendering just two hits. Kassidy Swan knocked a single, a double and brought in an RBI, LeBlanc had a hit and two RBIs and Sam Kenniff and Jenna Chapalonis each tallied a hit and an RBI in the victory.
Franklin Tech 15, McCann Tech 2 (5) — The Eagles erupted for eight runs in the second inning, paving the way for an independent win in five innings over the Hornets in Turners on Thursday.
Kaitlin Trudeau drilled a home run, two singles and brought in three RBIs, Kylee Gamache had a trio of hits and Cordelia Guerin had three hits including a triple and two RBIs for Franklin Tech (12-1, 8-0). Lauren Ross tallied a pair of hits and RBIs, Hannah Gilbert had two hits and an RBI, Kyra Goodell had an RBI single, Lauren Ross hit a triple and Kendra Campbell added a hit in the win.
Lauren Ross got the win in the circle, striking out seven.
Greenfield 22, Frontier 2 (5) — Amber Bergeron crushed a three-run homer, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBIs to help lead the Green Wave to a FCL West victory at Vets Field on Thursday.
Ainslee Flynn had a pair of hits and three RBIs, MacKenzie Paulin had three hits including a double and two RBIs, Carly Blanchard singled, doubled and brought in three runs, Rachel Dodge tallied a two RBI single and Kelsey Richardson had a pair of hits for Greenfield (8-3, 5-1). Paulin struck out nine to get the win in the circle.
Sophia Pinardi knocked a double, Jazzy Hayes hit a single and Ashley Taylor had an RBI single for Frontier (2-12, 0-7) in the loss.
Wahconah 1, Turners 0 — Emily Young knocked the lone hit off Warrior ace Avery Vale-Cruz, with Wahconah scoring in the sixth to drop the Thunder, 1-0, in Turners on Thursday.
Madi Liimatainen went the distance and struck out 10 for Turners (8-6, 3-4).
Taconic 13, Mohawk Trail 0 (5) — Aileen Moffatt had the lone Warrior hit in a loss to the Thunder in Buckland on Thursday.
Frontier 3, PVCICS 2 — A pair of doubles wins propelled the Redhawks past the Dragons in South Deerfield on Thursday.
Sydney Scanlon and Sam Baker picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 1 doubles while Grace O’Leary and Hashini Ratnatunge earned a 6-0, 6-0 triumph in No. 2 doubles for Frontier. The Redhawks won No. 3 singles via forfeit to get the victory.
Greenfield 4, Mohawk Trail 1 — The Green Wave buckled down to win a pair of tiebreakers en route to the victory on Thursday at the Davis Street Courts.
Jenna Keith won her No. 1 singles match against Mohawk Trail’s Paige King, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3, and Greenfield’s top doubles team of Kaitlyn Phillips and Rory Cronen-Townsend notched a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) win over the Warriors’ Conner Herzig and Lizzie Lynch.
Rebecca Covalenco also notched a win for Greenfield at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-0), and the No. 2 doubles pairing of Virginia Marin and Rebecca Covalenco took a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Palmer King notched Mohawk Trail’s lone point behind a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.
Chicopee 4, Turners 1 — Jill Reynolds and Maria LaBelle picked up the lone win for the Thunder in No. 1 doubles (6-2, 6-4) in the loss to the Pacers in Chicopee on Thursday.
