It’s been a long time since the Frontier softball team walked off the diamond victorious after a game against Turners Falls.
That changed on Tuesday.
The Redhawks put two runs on the board in the first inning and added a run in the second before exploding for eight runs in the third. Frontier then scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to close out a 14-2 Franklin County League West victory in five innings. It was the Redhawks’ first win over the Thunder since 2013, a 1-0 Frontier win at Zabek Field in South Deerfield.
Skyler Steele led the charge at the plate for the Redhawks (4-15, 1-9), smashing a grand slam, a double, a single and bringing in six runs. Delaney Fifield hit a double and a single and brought in three RBIs and Jazzy Hayes had a hit and two RBIs in the win. Ashley Taylor kept the Thunder (10-8, 4-6) lineup at bay, allowing just four hits while Olivia Machon robbed a pair of Turners home runs.
Paige Sulda hit a two-run home run for the Thunder, with Madi Liimatainen and Jenna Petrowicz both hitting safely in the loss. Liimatainen struck out 10 in the circle.
Greenfield 13, Taconic 1 — The Green Wave took the first game of a doubleheader with the Thunder behind five strikeouts in the circle and three hits from MacKenzie Paulin, three hits including a triple from Kelsey Richardson, two hits and four RBIs from Ainslee Flynn and a two-RBI double from Carly Blanchard.
In the second leg of the doubleheader, Ellis Benitez struck out two, Paulin hit a home run, Rachel Dodge had two doubles, two singles and three RBIs and Brielle Widelo had a pair of hits and RBIs to lead Greeenfield to a 17-5 victory at Vets Field.
Athol 5, Mahar 2 — Tied 2-2 heading into the top of the sixth, the Bears put up two runs and tacked another on in the seventh to pull away with a 5-2 win over its rival in Orange on Tuesday.
Dilan Fountain led the way at the plate with a home run, a double, a single and two RBIs for Athol (4-14). Shea Brennan hit a solo home run, Logan Cormier knocked an RBI double, Owen Willhite hit a double, Gabriel Hume had a hit and an RBI while Connor Mahony and Jacob Knowles each knocked a hit in the win.
Quentin Polana, Fountain and Noah Wein combined to throw a one-hitter, with Polana striking out nine, Fountain adding a strikeout and Wein striking out four.
Cole Johnson drilled a double for the lone Senator (3-11) hit. Liam O’Donnell went the distance on the mound, striking out five.
Monument Mountain 3, Greenfield 2 — The Spartans put the game-winning run across with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 3-2 victory over the Green Wave in Great Barrington on Tuesday.
David Carey tossed six innings for Greenfield (10-7), striking out eight and surrendering six hits. The senior added a double at the plate, MJ Paulin had a two-RBI triple, Michael Pierce knocked a pair of hits and Jackson Petrin and Caleb Thomas both hit safely in the loss.
Franklin Tech 5, Smith Academy 4 (11) — The weather halted the Eagles momentum on Monday, but it didn’t deter Franklin Tech from coming away with a key Bi-County League North vic tory on Tuesday.
The game was halted in the top of the 11th on Monday, with the Eagles having the bases loaded with one out and leading 5-4. It picked up again on Tuesday, but Franklin Tech recorded two straight outs as the Falcons didn’t let it extend its lead.
It didn’t end up mattering, as Mason Lehtomaki got two quick outs and struck out the final batter to seal a 5-4 Eagles victory in Hatfield.
Dylen Shinall and Sam Knight both came up with a pair of hits, with Shinall scoring the game-winning run and Knight providing an RBI. Cayden Lehtomaki knocked a triple, Jake Whitney singled and Alex Sulda picked up a win on the hill and added a single at the plate for Franklin Tech (9-8, 6-3).
