In response to the Dec 31 letter “Hate on the highway,” I drive I-91 most days. I have never seen “Hate on the highway.” I do see signs of protest. I have not attempted to engage the protesters on the bridges in discussion but I suspect they would be very open to it if I did. These are citizens who are using their time and braving the elements to bring about change in our society. I appreciate that the letter writer recognizes their constitutional right to express their views. I also appreciate that he advocates nonviolent responses to the protesters and their messages. But I strongly object to using such hyperbole to describe their motivations. The hate is not coming from the protesters. Perhaps one should look into our own hearts to see where that hate, if it exists at all, may really lie.
