GREENFIELD — The Greenfield girls basketball team needed a comeback in the final minutes to defeat Pioneer Valley Regional, 40-35, on Monday.

Greenfield trailed 35-31 with under two minutes to play. The Green Wave (9-9) got a clutch 3-pointer from Tayler Bergeron with one minute, 25 seconds left in regulation to cut the lead to a point.

After a defensive stop, Natalia Cody got aggressive and went to the basket. Cody got to her spot near the rim and shot amidst several Pioneer defenders. The shot went in and it gave Greenfield the lead it would not relinquish. Bergeron and Gloria McDonald (10 points) combined to go 4-for-4 from the free throw line to close out the Panthers in the final seconds of the game.

“I had been missing shots the whole game,” Cody said. “I needed to lock in and get these points. Do it for my team and do it for the seniors.”

The Green Wave honored lone senior McDonald before the game at Nichols Gymnasium. Bergeron finished with 19 points. She scored 13 points in the fourth quarter alone, fueling the comeback.
