Playing in a Western Mass. Class A consolation game, the Greenfield hockey team lost to Minnechaug, 3-1, at Olympia Ice Arena in West Springfield on Tuesday.
The Falcons avenged two regular season losses to the Greenfield where the Green Wave combined to score 17 goals. Minnechaug scored twice in the second period to take command.
Shawn Baumann scored the only goal of the game for the Greenfield, with assists coming from Luca Siano and Nico Siano. Cooper Smith made 22 saves for Greenfield. Chase Folli made 27 saves for the Falcons. Billy LaPalm had a goal and an assist for Minnechaug. Kelly Balog and Liam Fanueff also scored for the Falcons.
The Green Wave (11-8-1) now await their placement in the MIAA Division 4 tournament field. In the most recent power rankings, the Green Wave ranked 12th. Seeding day is Saturday where the MIAA will release the full brackets at 10 a.m.
Boys basketball
Athol 61, Lee 57 — In non-tournament action, the Bears left the Berkshires with a victory over the Wildcats. Karim Thomson scored 20 points for Athol. Dominik St. Andre added 19 points for the Bears. Eli Wein also reached double-figures with 11 points.
Frontier 68, Belchertown 46 — The Redhawks downed the Orioles in a non-tournament contest at Goodnow Gymnasium. Ty Skroski (17 points), Max Millette (21 points) and Alex Ellis (19 points) all reached double-figures for Frontier.
